Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good WebDesign Book or books that would give me good instruction and good demonstration on how to build webpages and maintain.

TIA for any suggestions or links.

You want to start right from the beginning
first you have to be sure that you will be XML ok
in HTML no big deal mostly paying attention to all end tags
look at W3C guidelines

Books:
HTML and XHTML @ o'reilly

then you need to learn CSS
in my mind one of the best book is
"Cascading style sheets" not the most recent but very well done.
by Hakon Wium Lie and Bert Bos @ Addison-Wesley

then after getting a few webs done you will look further and become more demanding; upon facts that you are doing it for $ or for self web enjoyment
you will need to educate yourself in deciding if you want to follow the MS route with ASP and SQL
or the Linux Apache route with PHP and MySQL
I design using the secon choice.

good luck

cheers

I have a html book from Tafe when I did a course and it's called, "Creating web pages with HTML" New perspectives series 2nd edition, Though there is a later edition now, Author is Patrick Carey. has more info on it. It's very easy to use and it explains what you are and why it's being done. It covers bits on Css and Javascript too. I find myself referring back to it when I'm having a mental blank.

I'm one of those people who really value a good book, however I wouldn't buy a book on basic stuff like (x)HTML/CSS/ design when there is so much information available online.
If you want to buy a book, buy it on something more advanced like PHP/MySQL or CGI IMHO.

As I said, there's a wealth of information available online for free, especially wrt basics.

Thanks all for your replies. I have plenty of HTML books and references and i'm doing an online course for HTML so I do have a good understanding (or will) of how HTML works and what the TAGS mean, etc. So I understand the HTML part just looking for a good book that would tutor me on how to build webpages from the ground up. I'm sure there are some good Webdesign books out there.

Thanks again!

I have SAMS "Teach yourself web publishing with HTML and XHTML" (21 day series).

I found this very good, although I do come from a programming background so JavaScript and dynamic content wasn't too much of a problem.

I really rate Fundamental Skills ( by glasshaus ( as an good primer to modern web design (eg, web standards, css, xhtml, accessiblity etc). It's one I use to teach my courses at the college I work at. If you're more advanced, they have The Web Professionals' handbook which looks pretty good tho I haven't read it yet.

but maybe that's just because i like supporting independent publishers ;-)
