Microsoft's resources can be a bit crappy for figuring this out. By looking at the interface, I see how things should work but it's obvious that I'm not seeing how they do work.
Any pointers to good resource sites would be appreciated. Thanks!

They have some utilities that can show you access levels and file permissions and other stuff, in a more concise format than MS tools.
