Good morning everyone,

I work for a company that sells, among other things, audio CDs. And occasionally a CD will not work in the customer's player. But upon return, we'll try it on players as well as PCs and, like some data CDs, it will work in some units and not in others. So I'm trying to give a plausible explanation to our supplier(s) as to why their CDs will play in some units and not in others. So, what is it about a CD (or player) that produces such inconsistent results? CD? or player? Maybe someone can point me to a website with helpful information. Thanks.

Brian S.

Not sure about this, but I know that laser alignment has alot ot do with it. If the laser that burned the cd is slightly out of alignment, the readers will not necessarily read it. It depends on the allowed variance the customers player or your cd readers work with. I've seen where a cd worked in the cdrw at home unless it was burned soem at work also, then not at home due to alignement of the burner.

Hugo...I have to believe what you say is at least part of the problem. Demonstrating such is a different story <g>. Anyway, I'm still out on the Web searching for more.

Thanks.

I think it has to do with the quality of the laser, some cheaper brand CD Drives will not read CDR/CDRW cd's for some reason, I have some burnt cd's that will only work in my HP Burner and not in my SONY CD Rom drive, but then a different brand of cd will work in both... Could be either CD or Laser Quality that is your problem....

well a lot of factors come into the action the laser quality the cd quality the physical placement of the player or the drivr while reading or while writing sometimes even the age of the player matters because the laser quality differs with age the alignment also changes with time the same way as floppies formatted in some drivrs may not work on the other but work fine on the same drive so it is not one factor but maximum time it is a combo of more than one factors

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. And, to help bring this topic to a close, I'll share one more thing. As a company that purchases CDs (audio and data) from numerous other supplies, mostly with little or no problem, we've come to the conclusion that this one supplier has either 1) poor-quality media and/or 2) deficient writing equipment. And it's unclear whether or not the CDs we get from them are actually produced by this vendor or if they, too, get them from someone else. So, thanks again to amandeephunjan, Neo81 and HugoGuessit for your input.

Well, if that happens to audio CD's, I don't think is because of bad laser alignment just because regular audio CD's aren't burnt, they are pressed (hope this is the right English term for it).
Anyway, did you make sure they aren't covered with a cd protection method called Cactus DataShield? This is recognizable by a small notice on the cd saying that the cd isn't playable on computers. However, this protection is based on a fact that the cd's doesn't fully meet the specifications of AudioCD (originally made by Pioneer) and therefore "dumb" (like in normal hi-fi's or other electronics) cd-players can play it. Smarter players (computer CD-ROMs and some of the electronics, too) doesn't recognize those cd.
There's a big movement in the world against this type of protection as more and more people complain about it.

There are some manufacturers that require a digital audio disk. IF it is not a "digital audio" disk, it won't work in the player, but it'll work on pc's and other standalone devices that don't require this special type of disk. Just a thought.
