Before anyone jumps to any conclusions, yes, I have set the service to run as an adminsitrator account and not left it as 'system account'. Also, I've been battling witht his for 2 weeks, and anyone finding the answer will undoubtedly have 'god status' (in my eyes at least...)

Summary: I've inherited an goldmine 6.5 system which in most cases works fine, but I've been unable to get goldsync to run succesfully as a serivce. It does however, run as a process absolutely fine. The problem with this is that the server needs to be permanently logged in to the server for goldsync to run.

The Goldsync 'process' shortcut uses the following line:

C:\apps\goldmine\gmw6.exe /U:MASTER /P:ACCESS /S:Goldsync

And it works fine.

I've tried two different ways to set up the goldsync service, once via the mapped drive, once via local path.

So via the mapped drive I did the following:

1) Launched goldmine on server via mapped drive (R:\) login to goldmine with master/access account. (Note mapped R: drive points to C:\apps\goldmine)
2) Enter goldsync administration center and 'install goldsync as service'. Goldsync service is listed in 'services' with executable path : \\hera\goldmine\gmw6.exe /s:service /u:MASTER /p:ACCESS
3) From 'configure goldsync service' panel, initial state is 'stopped' and 'start at boot up' is checked. After clicking 'start service' status changes to 'service is starting' but never changes to 'started' and goldsync appears not to be running (remote goldmine sites cannot sync to the server).

The only way to resolve this state is to terminate the gmw6.exe process that began when attempting to start the service.

This behavior occurs whether the service is configured to run a the system account OR to run as administrator (the exact same thing happens in both cases).

When the starting the goldsync service from the services admin panel, the progress bar moves progressively up to half way then moves very slowly until eventually throws an error - "Could not start the GoldSync service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not response to the start or control request in a timely fashion." and again the only way to resolve this state is to termintate the gmw6.exe process (created by the attempted service starting) from the task manager.

Alternative configuration: configuring from goldmine launched from C:\apps\goldmine (rather than via mapped drive).

NOTE : Previous goldsync service removed sucessfully within goldmine, and now absent from services panel.

Launched goldmine on server via application directory with master/access account. (i.e. gmw6.exe launched from C:\apps\goldmine)

Enter goldsync administration center and 'install goldsync as service'

Goldsync service is listed in 'services' with executable path : C:\apps\goldmine\gmw6.exe /s:service /u:MASTER /p:ACCESS

From 'configure goldsync service' panel, initial state is 'stopped' and 'start at boot up' is checked.

If the service is started the following error occurs - "Could not start the GoldSync serviceon the Local Computer. - Error 5: Access is denied."

If the log-on in changed from 'use local system accout' to run under administrator login the previous behaviour occurs i.e. After clicking 'start service' status changes to 'service is starting' but never changes to 'started' and goldsync appears not to be running (remote goldmine sites cannot sync to the server).

The only way to resolve this state is (again) to terminate the gmw6.exe process that was started by the service.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this problem?

Sounds like your problem may lie int hat the R:\ drive is not mapped when the machine is not logged in. Therefore your GoldSync service pointing to the UNC path for the Executable file to run GoldMine(GoldSync) is locating the .EXE but then it's looking to the GM.INI to tell it where the GoldMine files (\gmbase folder, root gm folder, contact files, potentially, etc.) are and that is pointing it to the R:\ drive and it's not able to find that unless a user logs in and maps those drives (which is why the Process-based GoldSync works) Maybe you need to add a

NET USE r: \\HERA\GoldMine\
to your autoexec.bat? Not sure if that would work, though..

Thanks for the reply, but as I later described in the post, I also tried doing this via a local path i.e. the executable path in the service manager reads c:\apps\goldmine\ etc and that produced the same problem. With regards to the .ini file - even when logged in as administrator and attempting to start the service manually (so the mapped R drive is most definitely in effect) it still has excatly the same problem.

Any other ideas appreciated.
