Let's say that I have GNS3 up and running on a couple of PCs (Emulating a Cisco 7200 series) and I want to "see" those "Routers" on my network.. In other words I have my actual equipment and I wish to run a straight-through from the GNS3 box (PC1's NIC) to one of my switches and place him on a subnet so that he shows up so that I can ping/traceroute to him ETC.

Example----------3640------------------
-------------------Cat2924XL-----------
-------------------PC1 Emulating 7200--

I will of course expand upon this setup once I get the basics working.... Also, do I need to setup the Microsoft loopback for this to work? These are Windows XP machines that I will be playing with for this..

I will be perfectly content enulating one router per PC for this scenario but if it is possible to do more than even better.. (That way I can place them on separate subnets in pairs)... Anyway, just a thought... Thanks for everything guys!

Maczen---how many connections do you plan on using for the frame relay? If only two, I have a 2503 as a frame switch that works great.

Burt

CiscoG,
Thanks for the link!

Burt,
I have an NM-4T in one of the 26xx's and currently using that as my frame relay switch... Have enough to play with now but when I get a couple of three foot serial cables plan to have the switch in-between four routers! That way I can play with route redistribution (OSPF to EIGRP ETC).. You can see the current setup on
Definitely looking for recommendations! Thanks guys!

That site is awesome Cisco! You recommend the 2503 Burt?? Instead of using the 3640???

maczen,

The 2503 will only work if you are going to connect 2 routers to your Frame Relay switch since it only has 2 serial connections.

I think his point was that 2501/2503 have 2 built in serial ports so no WICs or Network modules needed and they are very cheap.

The best 2500s for Frame Relay if you want more then 2 serial ports are -

Router Hardware Features
The multiport serial routers are available in the following configurations:

Cisco 2520/CPA2520
1 Ethernet port with a selectable attachment unit interface (AUI) connection or 1 Ethernet 10BaseT connection
1 Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) port (RJ-45)
2 high-speed synchronous serial ports
2 low-speed asynchronous/synchronous serial ports

Cisco 2521/CPA2521
1 Token Ring shielded twisted pair (STP) port or 1 Token Ring unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) port
1 ISDN BRI port (RJ-45)
2 high-speed synchronous serial ports
2 low-speed asynchronous/synchronous serial ports

Cisco 2522/CPA2522
1 Ethernet port with a selectable AUI connection or 1 Ethernet 10BaseT connection
1 ISDN BRI port (RJ-45)
2 high-speed synchronous serial ports
8 low-speed asynchronous/synchronous serial ports

Cisco 2523/CPA2523
1 Token Ring STP port or 1 Token Ring UTP port
1 ISDN BRI port (RJ-45)
2 high-speed synchronous serial ports
8 low-speed asynchronous/synchronous serial ports

Once again - the nice thing about the 2500s is that the DB60 connectors are built in - you do not need any WICs etc.

Awesome thanks...
I do have one more question pertaining to modules:
The WIC-1B-ST and WIC-1B-U

I am thinking

26xx 3640 3640 26xx
ST------ST ST------ST
U------U

Now, do I need anything in between the 3640's??? (In the U section???) I am a little hazy here but this is strictly for ISDN yes? (Sorry, will read up some more tomorrow but this is a working weekend for me so trying to get as many questions out as possible..LoL)

Which brings me to this:
I am now the proud owner of a Motorola FT100 Multiplexer T1/CSU... (Came with one of the 26xx's) It has a pair of DB25 fem connections on the back and a male DB9... Can I setup like this using FT100 and WIC-1DSU-T1's?

3640 (CSU) 3640
1DSU----FT100----1DSU

Please forgive me if I am asking something ridiculous here.. LoL... I am slightly sleep deprivated at the moment.. LoL

Thanks again guys!

maczen,

Forget the ISDN - YES you will need an ISDN simulator that has the proper "U" or "S/T" ports to connect to. Then you would connect a cable to the sim and another cable from the sim to the other ISDN port or card on the other router.

I played with an ISDN sim once at "train the trainer" class and it never worked right :-( and they paid about $1,000 for the sim unit.

My old 2500 router lab still has a shelf where I was going to put the ISDN sim box - they ran $500 to $800 so I never got one - learned what I needed to pass CCNA and was done with it.

I just checked eBay and did not see them like you did when they were on the Exam - you would see 2 2503s with the ISDN sim for about $800 to $1,200 back in the day.

Yeah---my class had an Adtran ISDN sim box that actually worked great. Boson NetSim has ISDN sim also, and it works great.

Burt

Burt,

My class in 1999 had one of the earlier ISDN sim boxes (not Adtran) Adtran came on later with what I think was the Adtran 5000 and it could simulate most WAN connections - my regional got several of those since they did CCNP training also.

I never did get a chance to play with those and from what they always said they worked great!

I remember seeing a demo by the Adtran product rep in the Cisco Academy suite at Cisco Networkers about 6 years ago - it was great but at $5,000 out of our school budget.

We did ISDN on the software sims before the company was bought by Todd Lammle of Sybex fame. At one time they were the best software router sim out there but Boson and others have kept up.

Just some thoughts!
