Globetrotting e-mail users

What solutions are avaliable to enable our globetrotting staff to access their e-mail, either from UK hosted POP3 accounts or UK internal Exchange server.

We used to use Compuserve but this is no longer sutiable as it does not autoconfigure local access numbers under Windows 2000, does any one have any ideas or knowledge of services that could be usefull?

Usually your own ISP will have a Global Access service which you can sign up for. It involves downloading some software and then you can dial in to your mail from almost any country. They usually charge a small fee for this but it's well worth taking up. Our staff uses it globally when they're away overseas and it's invaluable for them because they need to be able to access their own e-mail from almost anywhere via a local number and Global Access allows you to do this.

Msn messanger service offeres a free optional service to check up to 5 other pop3 accounts from within there web based mail service.

Only requirement is to have a (free) hotmail account to access.

As to the exchange mail. It is possible to setup the Outlook Web Access service on Exchange Server. This would require internet access to the exchange box, firewall implications, OWA setup and configuration. This would be a considerable project that the exchange admin would need more than a couple of minutes and a flick of a checkbox to do.

End result though is a web address that emulates the corporate mail environment, mail, calendars ect direct from the exchange box. Very useful when your staff are widely dispersed. (Exchange 2000 does OWA Sooo much better than 5.5, if you are considering implimenting OWA, seriously look at upgrading to Exchange 2000 Server as part of the project)

If you use your ISP's Global Access service you get direct access into your own mailbox without having to set up a Hotmail account and going through all the other drama to achieve this. Global Access services are quick, easy and painless to set up and use and they work incredibly well and efficiently anywhere, anytime... and ours only costs us NZD7.50 per hour to use plus the local call charges. Converted into GBP this is chicken feed (less than a pound an hour) since our currency is currently in intensive care and on life support !
