Hi All,

Ive just upgraded form exchange 5.5 to 2003
Im a tad confused about where my global address list is
Im presuming it should be in either "default global address list" or "all address list". It is in neither im wanting to go native as soon as possible, my main concern is when I decommission my old exchange my global address list will disappear.... is the a way I can populate this?

Thanks in advance

Your GAL doesn't actually live on the Exchange server as such, it is generated from an LDAP query to a Global Catalog, this looks up accounts with mailboxes that aren't hidden.
However if you click Preview in the Recipients, All GAL's, Default GAL it should list every entry that would be displayed in the GAL.

Any new accounts you add won't show up in the GAL until the Recipient Update Service has run to stamp them with an e-mail address from the default policy.

I have created a brand new user and forced the RUS
It still doesnt create a GAL entry?
Also there isnt a preview option on the default gal?
Hope you can help further

Thanks in Advance

Is there an e-mail address for the user in their AD account now?

If so try sending it a message to activate the mailbox.

The DS AccessCache time of around 2 hours is also ringing a bell.

i.e. Exchange will cache stuff from the GC and use that rather than doing a lookup each time.
Haven't found a way to force an update of the cache yet but I'm sure there must be one.

You also need to be aware that the GAL can take up to 48 hours to update if you are using Outlook in Cached mode. This is due to the fact that you are actually using the Offline Address List rather than the true GAL when you are in Cached mode.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
