When I add new users to the AD domain and give them mailboxes within ex2k, the user cannot setup a email account using the exchange server settings in outlook 2000 (and 2002). i recieved the error when trying to check the name (Outlook 2k):

"The action could not complete. The name could not be matched to a name in the address list."

I noticed that new users were not being added to the global address book. I also could not download the address book, i recieved the error:

"'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x80004005):'The operation failed'".

these users can connect using imap or pop3. but i would like them to be added to the global address list...

Any AD/EX2k gurus, please chime in...

Maybe they are hidden from the GAL? In AD Users and Computers, select View and Advanced Features. Open the problem user account's properties and select the Exchange Advanced Tab. There is a box that says "Hide from Global Address List", or something similar. Uncheck the box if it is checked.

Your Recipient Update Service isn't working!

Offline Address Book also looks like it is having problems. Did you remove an Exchange Server? Dan

This is happening to me, too. I DID remove an original Exchange server without replicating the Public Folders. Real bad! That server is long gone. I've combed through the web for some sort of fix outside of rebuilding the Exchange server from scratch, but I did not find any answers. Is rebuilding the Exch server from scratch the last resort?

Thanks in advance!
Joel

No basically you need to point both the RUS and Offline Address Book to the new server. Then GUIDGEN if the server removed was the first Exchange server. Dan

Thanks, Dan. I think that the OAB is already pointed to the new server. RUS? In the course of cleaning this up, I've also used GUIDGEN, but maybe I have to it again and also look up my past notes on it. If you happen to know of a link detailing your suggestion, I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks!

Joel

RUS = Recipient Update Service. Very close in ESM to the Offline Address List. Dan

Duh! (RUS).
Anyway, recreated the RUS and Offline Address List, then Guidgened the System Folders. Problem still present. Should I have first Deleted the Offline Address Book in the Public Folders before the Guidgen?
Thanks in advance, Dan. I feel so close at resolving this.

Do new user get e-mail addresses? Or do you add them?

What is the exact problem your having now? Dan

Hi Dan,

Just OAB. The clients get the following error when synch'ing Outlook: 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x80004005):'The operation failed'". No Global Address Book is then available when Offline.
I've tripled-checked ADSI settings. Everything points to the right server.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer this.
Regards,
Joel

Did you find a resolution for this problem? I am getting the same.

No I have not. I may have to completely rebuild the Exchange server from scratch. I'm hoping to avoid that, since my Exchange server is running pretty smooth except for this problem.
