I have two PCs both with 1000 Mbps cards - can I get gigabit speed to make file transfers between the two PCs if I install the switch downstream of a router /cable modem? Ot will the data have to "up to the router" and then back down and over to the other PC? I don't care about the speed to network printer, NAS, and internet as it is plenty fast. But would like to see 1Gbps between the two PCs for transferring large files. Or would I have to purchase an expensive Gigabit router?

If you're just transferring the files one time, you could use a crossover cable between them, and not have to have any gear in between.

Otherwise, a Gigabit switch is what you're looking for.

You may use a Gigabit switch between the PCs and before the router to get Gigabit speeds on the LAN. Simply plug the I am doing exactly this right now. As this will be a Layer Two device make sure it is a large enough switch to handle future need, and make sure it is a switch, not a hub.

Er, Simply plug the switch into a port on the router. I am showing 1Gbps at the connection on both ends.

That's what happens when the phone rings during posting. I wish these pesky customers would leave me alone during lunch!!!

Thanks. Win XP does not like to have the crossover AND another connection to the router. I have lived with that configuration for a couple of years and always had the little red "security center" flag in the lower right tray, and the network icon always had the yellow ! sign. But now I built a new PC with only one gigabit ethernet connectinons and beleive your answer is the best solution - a gigabit switch (not hub) between the router and the two PCs allowing the high speed between the two PCs (essentially a hi-spd "crossover cable"). Thanks a lot for confirmation as gigabit routers appear to be in the hundreds of dollar range.

I would setup the 2 1000 speed computers on the Giga switch then tie in that switch to the Router

I bought a D-Link Gamers router and it is a 1000/100/10 speed switch that is built in

Exactly what I did with a noticable improvement in transfer speed. WORKS GREAT! Many thanks to Wahnula and Firefolfrl.

You might want to research the issues 1000 speed networks have with Windows firewall service. andyou might be able to tweak some speed

glad to hear it is working
