Gigabit over copper

Hi all

I have a Catalyst 4006 with a 6 port Gigbit switching module slotted in (amongst others). Having being advised that I could buy a 1000Base-T GBIC and slot it into the module to get Gigabit to one of my servers, I tried the advice and found I can only get 100Mb out of the GBIC.
Looking at the switch compatability matrix on the Cisco site I see that the GBIC is only good for the 29 & 35XL switches.
Does anybody have any ideas how I can get Gb over copper to my server?
Is it looking like I will have to kill my advisor and get a Fibre NIC / GBIC and go optical??

Cheers

Steve

Dear Steve

At first based on technical matter and on theory you can have Gigabit Ethernet over copper with Catalyst4006 and 6 port GE module and GE GBIC.
But and important matter is that you must a CAT5 enhanced or CAT6 or CAT7 cable in order to run GE over copper.

There's no need to use copper for this matter because copper cabling based on CAT5e or CAT6 or CAT7 does this very well.

In our projects we use this matter and having no problem in speed and reliability.

If you cannot get GE speed may be from extended distance(100meters)

I've opened a case before as i had the same concern:
I've a catalyst 4006 with a module with 6 ports Giga GBIC Based & I would like to use the GBIC 1000BASE-T. i had a response that this will not work. There's a different module in the Cat 4006 with 12 ports Giga (10 ports 1000BASE-T + 2 ports Giga GBIC Based).
You can use any cabling of the following: Cat5e, Cat6 & Cat7.

Or, you could order A WS-X4424-GB-RJ45
, which is 24 port 10/100/1000b copper RJ-45's... We have ordered 2 of these, 1 for each of our 2 switches on our 2nd Floor where our server room is located... You'd still have to make sure your building and patch cables support the speed though...
