ghosted 2k server image boot options

Not sure if that is the right subject, but here is the situation I would like some information on if possible.

My buddy has a 2k server on an Abit kt7 raid mobo. Right now he has his 4 HD's set up on the Raid and the OS is installed on a 5 gig partition of the first drive, there is a 2nd partition on the first drive and the last 3 are striped into 1 volume.

What he wants done is the 4 drives on the raid converted to 2 mirrored volumes. I want to install another HD on the mobo ata100 IDE channel and move the os to it the reformat and convert the 4 drives into 2 mirrored drives.

My question is, if I ghost the OS partition and then put it on the new HD that will be in the primary master ide channel, what setting do I need to adjust so that it will boot from that and not try to boot from the raid?

I think I'm understanding what you want. First, he'll have to back up his data (I know, that sounds like a bonehead statement, should be followed with something intelligent like: duh; but you'd be surprised at how often people don't back stuff up) and then break the stripe.

I don't know for sure, is the Abit adapter SCSI? If so, you'll need to do a couple of things. First, ensure that the drivers are loaded for both devices that are installed. Next, you may have to edit the boot.ini file and add either the correct ARC pathname for IDE or SCSI. Some sample ARC pathnames are as follows:

SCSI(x)disk(y)rdisk(z)partition(a)
Multi(x)disk(y)rdisk(z)partition(a)

The first one, SCSI, is generally used when an SCSI disk drive is connected to a SCSI adapter whose BIOS has not been loaded. It can be helpful as a trouble shooting device on a SCSI based system though.

The second one, Multi, is for an IDE or a SCSI disk drive supported by a SCSI BIOS that loads when the SCSI adapter detects a bootable device on the lowest SCSI ID on most SCSI adapters. This is what you'd commonly see in the boot.ini file.

If you do add a statement to the boot.ini file, be careful not to change what's already in there, simply add a line. You'll have to change the attributes of the file first so that it's not marked Read Only, that will allow you to add statements to it.

What you are asking should be pretty straightforward. I hope these tips help.

What a dork, I completely misunderstood. Duh (see? comes in handy). If you do what you mentioned, you may have to go into the BIOS and tell it to look to the IDE channel for bootable HDD's. For example, set the Boot Priority menu to look to the IDE channel first. If you're adding a fifth HDD, it should be pretty easy.

Sorry for the confusion. Duh.
 
Actually you got it right both times. The abit is actually a ide raid and I forgot about changing bios so thank you. But the boot.ini file information is what I was curious about. I believe you may answered my question. As for a back up we are in the process of that right now. No tape, so he purchased a liteon 48x cdrw and we are backing up to cd.
