I recently installed Nortons SystemWorks Pro Edition 2003. I can't find a way to get it to backup my C drive to a usb removeable drive. I'm using a Compaq model 5000, Windows XP, 1.8 Intel processor with 512 ram. I get a message that it cannot find the removeable drive. I did not have the removeable drive on when I ran the software the first time. The removeable drive shows up in the menu of locations to backup to. I've uninstalled the software once already and it did not seem to make a difference. Thanking you in advance for any suggestions and/or advice.

I've got that same version of Ghost, though I haven't used it for USB external devices. However, there is a setting you can adjust. First, open the Systemworks main panel that shows the different products installed. Go to Options -> Norton Ghost. On the left side, click on External Storage Driver Settings. It'll give you options to set USB 1.1, USB 2.0, Firewire, and even assign drive letters to external devices. Try the drive-letter assignment if all else fails...

The menu that you suggested does provide the options for identifying whether the external drive has usb 1 drivers, usb2 or neither. It also gives you the option of allowing for a letter to be assigned to the drive. However, I've tried every combination I can think of ( except the right one) When I go to the advance settings, the option for usb 1 is not available as a choice. My Pc does not have a usb 2 card installed. According to the menu, I should pick the usb 1 option (although the removeable drive is a usb 2 device). The message that I get when the backup attempt fails states:(40204) can't find disk you may need to load additional drivers. Do you think that maybe the problem has to do with the PC having usb 1 capabilities and the removeable drive being a usb 2 device? By the way the removeable drive works fine except with the ghost backup. Any ideas are welcomed. Thanks

Nevermind that it is a USB 2.0 device. That shouldn't matter since USB 2.0 is backwards compatible. When connected to a USB 1.1 port, it is only seen as a USB 1.1 device to the PC.

If you open Windows Explorer, does your USB burner show up as a drive letter? If so, then try this:

Go back to the External Storage Driver Settings, select USB 1.1, and make sure the option to Assign Drive Letters is unchecked. Hit OK at the bottom and try again.

-OR-

If your USB burner does not show up with a drive letter, then do the same thing but leave that box checked. Since you are attempting to assign drive letters, reboot before you try it again.

If you're still having problems, check Device Manager to make sure all devices check out OK and that USB isn't flagged. ~cdogg

I tried your suggestions without any success. The removeable drive letter shows up in the destination window. I did notice that when I look in the advanced settings, the option for usb 1 drivers is not available. The choice is either no usb drivers or usb 2 (only if all devices cards and chipsets are usb 2). I also checked the device manager and there are no flags on any of the devices. Do you know how I can tell if my removeable drive is ghost printed properly? Thanks again. ED N.

Hi,
I was having this same problem with Ghost while trying to use my iomega usb drive. I saw your post along the way and thought I'd offer my findings now that I've resolved my problem....

In my case, the problem was that the usb port I was using was on a usb hub, not a direct attach. This was even though the port was visibly a direct attach to the machine. My machine had 6 usb ports, 4 in back and 2 on the front of the machine. The two in front and two in the back were all mounted on a hub internally. When I switched to one of the other 2 ports on the back everything worked fine.

I hope this helps and is not too late. Good luck.
