i have a desktop computer, win 2000, recently it was shutting
down completely...when i pushed the power button maybe after the tenth time it might go on and know it wont go on ..but the main thing is , it's turns on by itself and then off again..a friend mentioned it might be the power supply(the ps fan works)

any help would be great..

thanks

I would say your friend is probably right, see if you can get hold of another PSU and try it with that All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

I had similar trouble with a gigabyte motherboard. I found that it wasn't the PSU but the motherboard

I've seen similar things with dodgy ATX power switches (20 pence worth!).

A problem with your PC??? Never...

Check your Power options in the control panel for your shutting down problems.

You may find that it is set to shut down after a period of no activity.

As for your having to press the power button about ten times, you may have a delay on the power off. Try pressing and holding the button for 4 or 5 seconds. I have seen this before a number of times.

Finally, regarding your machine turning itself on and off!
Do you have a network card? It may be a wake-on-lan setting.

Try holding in the power button for a constant 10 seconds, after it shuts down, or to shut it down.

Once you are powered down then wait 5 seconds, and push the power button in a regular fashion to power back up.

Tell us if you are getting the " It is now safe to turn off your PC ".

Is your motherboard advanced enough to turn completely off and not get the above prompt?

Some Motherboards will shut off the system in the event that the CPU reaches a certian temp limit. Might want to check if the CPU fan is running and also check the settings in the BIOS to see what it is detecting regarding this.

Might help but I suspect, as the others, that the Power Supply might be bad.

thnaks for all the advice........will be trying it this weekend...........

later..
