Is it possible for a document to just dissapear? Recently I was saving a Wordperfect 8 document and lighting stuck by and knocked out the power. When the power came back on the document is no where to be found on the harddrive.
If the Save had not yet written the file to disk, it's entirely possible it isn't there. If you had Timed Backup on, there might be a file in your timed backup directory that you can open - take a looke there for files like WP{wp}.BK* and see if one of them has a time stamp that could be your lost work. If it's there, just open it directly in WordPerfect.
I would highly recommend the purchase of an uninterruptible power supply. Depending on your needs, they are VERY inexpensive these days, and in the above situation, you would have not experienced any file loss if you were actually in the process of saving the file.
A UPS will allow you to save all open work files and then perform an orderly shutdown assuming the power failure was more than just a temporary blink in the power. They are well work the small investment.
Secondly, as a previous poster has mentioned, turning on automatic backup is crucial, as well....who hasn't experienced a child or a pet "accidentally" turning off your computer?
Agreed on the UPS recommendation - I have an UPS on one of my home systems, and the other home system is a laptop, so battery backup is built in. If you live in a thunderstorm area, UPS protection should be standard. They're really inexpensive now, too!
