Arcserve v9 running on Win 2000 with an IBM 4560 Tape library. GFS 5 day default solution, I need to take a week of data to store off sight and rotate in another weeks worth of tapes. Can I do this? and do I need to dismount the magazine when I replace the tapes then mount the magizine with the next weeks of tapes ? with this solution do I just replace fridays full backup tape? when do I replace the tapes. Do I replace with a blank tape or labled tape?

Hi
You should take offsite only the weekly full backup
and you need to media pool and right click on media pools and
create a offsite location, then move the weekly tape which want to send offsite and assigned it to the location, then the weekly tape
should be disappear from weekly_pool and then arcserve will ask for a blank tape.
Yes you need to dismount the magazine when you replace the tapes and mount the magazine with Blank tape arcserve will assign the label GFS accept only blank tapes.

There is no reason to Create an offsite location as this will remove the tapes from the GFS rotation.
I recommend running a report (Quick Start - Report).
Run a GFS Media Predicition report. This will tell you when tapes are required and you can have them schedule to come back onsite.
If you are running an Incremental/Differential I would recommend running a copy job to copy the full weekly backup and keep this onsite for restoration purposes. you can then keep the Full backup offsite for as many weeks as needed

xenotec,
it is not a must to create an offsite location and move the tape to it but this just to know where this tape gone this only to tracking purpose and as a record.

Copy can't be used as you mentioned above it only to copy files/folder machine to machine the only way to clone a tape and send it offsite to to use the command line tapecopy.
and to use tapecopy you need one of these:
1-a tape library with 2 drives
2-backup to file system and then use tape tapecopy to copy it for offsite location then the only backup you have is on file system

3-backup to tape and then use the tapeopy to copy it File system and then use again the tapecopy to copy the files system to the clone tape.

if you select to use the first option you need a loot of space in your file system to hold at least 2 weeks of backup

if you use the third option again it is reqiure alot of time ,and it will be more difficult if your backup span to more than one tape.

ok created an offsite location. moved the tape to that location. check the prediction report and it said that Fri. (my Weekly tape) I can use a blank tape, the report also said that mon I can use the following media
1. 1-gfs-mon-bla bla
2. blank tape
does this mean that if I don't put a blank tape it will write over the old mon tape?

if I want to bring in the Fri tape that is off location back into the rotaion do I highlight the tape in Location Maintenance and Clear Location?

Yes if you put the tape instead on blank tape it will overwrite it.

Sorry for the confusion. The copy job I was refering to is:
Tapecopy.exe - This command allows you to make logical, media to media copies at session level, or of two different types of media.
This will allow you to keep tapes onsite for immediate recovery purposes and also helps with fault tollerance. You will need 2 tape drives to achieve this though.

xenotec,
It is not necessary to have two drives to do tapecopy you can also use it to copy from filessystem media to tape drive and vice versa.

cheers

Using GFS, the media is labled 1-GFS-Mon-bla bla bla, so on and so forth how will scannig lables affect this? When the library scans the lables does it replace the 1-GFS-Mon-bla bla bla lable assigned to the media?
How come I can't dismount 1 tape at a time? It requires me to dismount the entire magazine.

there are 3 'identifiers' for media within ARCserve if there is a library with Barcode scanner available :
1. the random id ( cannot be influenced by the user, it is given to the media by ARCserve )
2. the Barcode ( this is the only id that is always the same, both on the label itself as in the ARCserve database)
3. the name, given to the media by the user OR when you are using rotation schemes like GFS by ARCserve and the user
so barcode and medianame are different and can both be seen in the ARCserve database

Dismounting through the ARCserve GUI is on a 'per magazine' basis. The dismount option is ment to release the tapes within ARCserve and send all tapes to their home slots if neccessary so the user can open the library doors and take the tapes out without any tapes still remaining in the drives ( which can happen when you just open the doors without dismounting the magazine )
