GFS scheme
7 days per week custom GFS full nightly backup

Problem:

Media is being held in save set beyond its retention date. Example, weekly tape W-HT2002-SAT 5/4/02 which should have a 34 day retention is still being held in the save set. Today being 6/11/02 shouldn't this tape have automatically been moved to the weekly scratch media pool? The weekly save set contains the minimum number of required tapes, 4. The weekly scratch set contains 1 blank. Do I need to move the blank tape from the scratch set to the weekly save set so the W-HT2002-SAT 5/4/02 tape can be released and the minimum number of tapes still be meet?
Thanks!

I've been looking at this myself. There seems to be an overriding "preserve media" option. This as standard is set to 4 for daily, 5 for weekly and 12 for monthly. Meaning it always holds on to this number of tapes, so you need 1 more adding for a tape to move into the scratch set.
If you open your backup job, then click on the schedule job tab. There are your options on the right greyed out, I've tried to change the weekly preserve media option from 5 to 4, but it always reverts back. The simplest answer at the moment is to add in another tape, though I haven't tested this yet.

In Manager/Media pool, expand your media and right click on the pool in question. Select properties and you'll find "Min # of media in save set" and "Retention Times" in days. A media is not moved to the scratch set until both these parameters are met.

The problems still occurs despite the min number of media and retention times all being correct. Daily seems fine, again referring to my earlier post, there its the overall "preserve media" option of the backup job itself that is possibly the cause.
