I have a co-worker who's internet access will not work from her machine and it's stumpted all of us in the office. I can ping any machine on the network, including the default gateway, but am unable to ping any site on the internet. The DNS is resolving names. What else should I check?

Thanks for your time,

Brad Gallagher

Does your firewall restrict the ip address? Is the browser screwed - proxy settings, etc? Try opening a command prompt and do a 'tracert Where does this stop? If it leaves your network then it's probably something on her machine. Again, from a command prompt, do a 'telnet 80'. If the screen goes black, enter 'GET /' (you won't see anything until you press enter). Press enter. You should get some sort of raw html back.

Is it a software firewall on her machine (Win XP, Zonealarm, etc)? If you have the XP firewall turned on, you can disable internet explorer from accessing the Internet. If you have a firewall turned on, disable it and if you are able to connect then you know it's something with the firewall settings.
