I just installed corel linux os onto my pc and i need help installing a modem and adding an internet connection so i can get onto the w.w.w. with my brand new linux ;) thanks
Once you've put the modem into your machine, you need to see if the kernel has modem support compiled into it. If you're in X, then at a x-term, type in /usr/linux/make xconfig, this should bring up a nice little menu. This menu won't necessarily tell you if the kernel has modem support compiled into it (you would have to try using your modem to see). The menu is pretty self-explanatory, and I don't really have time to explain the entire thing. Once you've figured configured the kernel in there, you need to compile it. There is one big command that will calculate dependencies and clean them, install the kernel, and the modules, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. I would suggest getting WvDial, a really nice program that can connect you to the internet. <A HREF=" TARGET="_new">
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)

PS I almost forgot, make sure your kernel sources are in usr/src/linux (the above directory is wrong) or there is a symbolic link to them. If this is not where they are, find them and make a symbolic link to that area. If they are gzipped, be sure to unzip them, etc.
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)

Unless they have changed it, Corel Linux supports the KDE desktop. Using the kppp dialer is "dead easy". Just about everything you need to do is in the kppp setup tool.
Also; if you're looking to use a free ISP; free is the only one I know of so far that can be used on a non-Win/Mac box; go to <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> to register & get the info....it requires no9 additional software to be installed; jsut a little bit of patience with kppp. :)
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net
SearchMaster Interface...11-in-1
Wanting to learn Assembler; please e-mail me any tutorials or links for it that are useful to you :)
