getting numbers in a list to line up

example of how it want it to line up:

how can i do this in Indesign?
 
Click on the Text type tool.
Click/Drag your text box.
Open your Character Pallette (Window/Type&Table/Character).
Select your Paragraph tab and click on the center justifying tab (second from the left).
Start your typing. All will be centered the way I see your numbers.

This is with cs2 and WinXP.

well, it's not really supposed to be looking like it's centered. It's supposed to be right justified so that the dots after the numbers line up. Would I just use the right justified tab instead of the center tab?
 
That is correct- use the right justified tab. (On my screen, the message with the numbers were aligned with the center of the numbers, not the periods.) The right justify tab is labeled Align Right.

Just below are some dropdown boxes that also let you adjust some spacing- ie. space between the numbers, how close to the edge your numbers are to the text box... Just select them and play a bit. Much better than using spaces and tabs to finetune your spacing.

Oh- they are in the paragraph palette.If they don't appear, hit the little arrows that are immediately to the left of the word Paragraph. You might have to click more than once to get the full array of choices. With your text selected (Select All or Ctrl-A), you can now adjust the spacing. Sometimes between lines (say if you are using a font and the letters overlap). The Character Palette also has similar boxes to control spacing between letters...

When I did my table of contents, I simply used a separate text box with a justification align right command to create a straight column of numbers. I had to be careful to allow spaces for different font sizes in the other text box that contained the summary of content in the book. However, it actually worked, accomplishing precisely the objective you describe.

Two separate columns: one for content; one for numbers.
