I am in desperate need to get more slots and scratch tapes in my library. What are some ways to do this? Is searching for "unavalible" volumes, and ejecting them out a good method?

Hello-

If you have the money, I'd recommend purchasing a larger library or expansion slots for your current library.

If this isn't feasible, then I recommend the following:

1- Do a 'q vol' and copy the contents into excel. Do a text to columns to help organize the output.
2- In excel, sort the data and delete your diskpools and copy pools.
3- The remaining output should be your onsite pool tapes. Sort these by filling / full. Delete the filling.
4- Sort by the % full. From the most full tapes, checkout and remove however many scratch tapes are needed. (ie- if you need 10 scratches, take the top 10 fullest tapes and check'em out and remove them- replace with 10 scratches).

Warning- if a restore is needed, it'll probably require a pool tape or two that has been checked out. Be ready to feed your library tapes in this event. Also note, this isn't an TSM best practice (removing onsite pool tapes).

Anyway, hope this helps. -JG

You can identify less than 5 10 or even 1% utilised tapes then perform move datas on them - this will increase your scratch tape count without the need for checking more in.

This will help:

select volume_name,pct_utilized from volumes where pct_utilized<10 and pct_utilized>0 and stgpool_name='STORAGE POOL NAME'
