Getting IP from Netgear WG602 Access Point 1

Hello,

I am trying to find out what IP address a Netgear Router (WG602) is configured to at my workplace.
My Gateway IP is that of another router which is not the correct one I am after, so I presume it maybe connected to this one (somehow).

Are there any utilities that I can download that will allow me to plug a Lan cable from a PC to the router and discover what IP address and port number it is set to?

If you plug a LAN cable to your PC & the router, have your PC set to obtain it's IP address via DHCP, you should be able to find out your routers address (if it is the DHCP server) by typing 'ipconfig /all' in to a command prompt. Just look for the default gateway, that should be your router. You could always reset the router to the factory defaults. This would enable you to set the router to what ever IP address that you want. The default is often 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

The default is often 192.168.0.1

or 192.168.1.1, or depending on the IT department and network at your workplace it could also be in the 10.x.x.x range... JFYI...

the first part that kestrel1 mentioned, about the DHCP, should be your ticket... as I am assuming that reseting the ROUTER at work would probably be a BAD thing to do, if you are not the IT guy there...

Thanks to both your responses.
The DHCP idea will probably be best as you said, so I will try this.
I am the IT guy at my workplace but all the routing has been set up by an outsourced IT company.
Since nobody in the office knows anything about IT, I am having to learn how everything is configured.
The IT company have forgot how are network is set up!!

Yes, resetting the router would be a bad idea as it would mean re-configuring all the routing tables.

Yeah, we have to pay each time we call up our IT Support company.

Anyway, it turns out that some other company actually set up the Router and I now have the Passphrase and Key so I dont actually need to know the IP address.

I have two keys that are a passphrase and key1.
How do I enter both these keys to connect to the access point?
Whats a passphrase?

Hmmm... the term passphrase is not very common...

so I am assuming that it is the logon password to the router itself... which you would need to gain access to change settings to the router... you will need this to check if the AP is set to either WPA or WEP as encryption (I believe it is set to WEP)...

ComputerDude555 - you are talking about a wireless access point, NOT a router? (WG602 is an access point)

And all you really want to do is connect to the wireless network? From a PC or laptop? So you just need to select the wireless network (you know the SSID?) and then supply the passphrase when prompted. Passphrases are used to generate keys - usually easier to remember than the hex key generated


Or is this not it?

The access point is probably set to pick up an IP address from the router (if you need to access the config page for the acces point, you'd need to know what that IP address its been allocated - an ip scanning app (like angry ip scanner) should find that for you, if its not available from the router).

anyway, let us know how you get on, and if you need more, please clarify what you are actually doing!

I have clarified as much as possible what I am doing.
I never knew an access point and a router was two seperate devices. I thought it was just an interchangable term.

Yes, I do just want to connect to the wireless network from a PC.
Windows never prompts me for the passphrase though, I thought this is something that you enter in the AP's setup screen to generate a key1 (which I already have).

I configure the connection by using the Wireless Network Setup Wizard on WindowsXP and enter the SSID and key1 but it still does not connect.
I am told that the key1 definetly works.

I will try that program that you have suggested.

PC running XP with wireless network card should have wireless icon in the tray. right clicking on it and selecting view available networks should display just that. Your access point SSID should appear on this list (may be only entry) - unless the access point is configured to hide the SSID (in this case you'll need to supply the SID in the wireless NIC advanced properties - which sounds like what you may have been doing). If it appears, you click on connect button and are prompted for the key (not the SSID). Enter the passphrase or the key and it should connect and pick up IP address. If it doesn't, either the passphrase/key is wrong or there's a problem between the wireless NIC & the access point (this does happen). If you have the access point's IP address, you can get into its config via web browser - and set the wireless key to what you want if necessary (but if its being used successfully already by other machines in your set up, suggests a problem with the PC you've been using, and you don't want to upset other users!)
