Getting Fax Tone Sometimes? 1

I have no fax extensions setup in the system nor do I have any fax machines on the phone system (we use eFaxing) but we are getting a fax tone when calling into the Voicemail system remotely. It seems to happen if you call the system, do your business and hang up and then call it right back. It did it a few times when you called in and after the autoattendant answered and transferred to voicemail but has gone away.

Anyone ever heard of that or know what's going on?

I can think of a couple of possibilities.
The number you are calling to access VM, is it a system number or a seperate stand alone number programmed to cover to VM, or answered at the line level by VM? Could it have a modem or fax, or a fax switch attached?
Could you have remote access administered with no barrier code on this line and you are receiving a modem answer from the processor.
Could you have a cross on a line to your e-fax that is being tripped by ringing voltage from the called voicemail line?
You might try disconnecting the called number line (if POTS, standalone)call it and see if the fax tone still presents itself.

Since we know you have a MLM-007 for your voice mail, the most likely cause of your problem is that you have assigned the 7th port of the MLM-007 as a MEMBER of your voice mail calling group.

The 7th port is a modem.

Good call MM, I didn't think of that one, must have a neuron leak somewhere, I'll bet you nailed it.

Yeah, that was it. Duh, after going back to the manual I see the port allocation. Noob mistake. Thanks for the tip!

This also means that you will want to set the VM Calling Group to Linear hunting, instead of Circular. Linear will keep the last ports unused more of the time, so there will be less interference with setting MW lites and outcalling.
