Hi, I wonder if anybody can help me with getting my scanner to work.

Its a Genius colourpage vivid Pro II.
I can manage to download drivers that said they were compatible with XP, but none of them are (seems to be the same driver file distributed everywhere)
When I unzip the files, and set off the setup .exe, I get this error message:

C:/Windows/System32/autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. choose close to terminate application.

Ive tried adding it thru 'add new hardare' in control panel, and thru a piant progrma or two.

Does anyone know where I can get working XP (Pro) drivers, or somehting that will make it work?

Thanks in advance :)

Instead of running the setup.exe, try extracting the files into a temp folder and then browse to the folder when adding new hardware looks for it.

Does the PC detect the presence of the scanner when connected?

What type of connection is it? ie: USB...Parallel...SCSI...

Hi Mainegeek,
When I 'add new hardware' it dosnt recognise the scanner at all.
Even manually adding dosnt work.
And when I first connected, it didnt recognise it. The scanner has previously been working on a diff computer running W98.

The scanner is connected to my PC using Parallel connection.

Hi,
Ive followed your advice, changed the BIOS setting to EPP, but still nothing.
Yes, the power adapter works.
It is plugged in now, and lit up. But it dosnt show up anywhere in XP.
I tried to manually add new hardware, and when it came to pointing it to the folder with the unzipped files in - it couldnt find an .inf file for it.
On closer inspection, there is no .inf file in the folder.

Im currently trying to find a different driver file.
Anymore help to get this scanner working will be great.

Maingeek advised a possible change to EPP, but it's my understanding that ECP might be better for scanners. What BIOS setting did you have before for this parallel port?

Do you KNOW that this port works ok?

What about the cable - try a different one maybe?

Often parallel port scanners can be put in-line between say a printer and the computer. If this is your configuration, try disconnecting any device attached to your scanner, so the scanner becomes the only device on this parallel port.

Hi G0AOZ
The seeting for the paralell port was set to: 'Normal'

I changed it to EPP as per Mainegeek
And have now put it on ECP.
Still nothing.
When I change EPP to ECP, the DMA value is hilighted, and is set to 3.
I havnt changed this but is this setting OK?

I know that this port definatly works, as I had an old printer printing on it just prior to trying to setup this scanner.

The scanner is also wired up direct...no printer-scanner chain.

Looks like you've done pretty much everything you can with the port settings. I would definitely try a different cable if you've not already done so. I note that my old Genius scanner (not same model as yours) has a 25-pin D type connector rather than a Centronics one. I am actually using a long extension cable (25-pin straight through) to connect mine.

The other thing I note is that the file size for the Windows 98 driver download is a different size to that for Windows 2000/XP. Ok, this may or may not indicate that the unzipped files will be any different but it points in that direction. Where are you downloading from?

Thumbing through various sites, it seems that some Genius scanners do prefer EPP, although ECP is generally accepted by many scanners. My apologies to Maingeek here. I also note there may be a possible conflict with printer drivers assigned to LPT1, albeit you don't have the printer attached. Try changing the printer driver to a different port, reboot, and see if that makes any difference.

I know you stated you had the Vivid PRO II, but is it worth trying the Vivid PRO driver? CPV+2K.EXE - 778Kb. This has a later date than the one you're currently trying to use.

I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas now...!
