Getting 16 Bit applications ot work on XP Pro

Anyone able to help?

The application is "The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations" - 1993 vintage copyright by OU Press and "AND Software b.v." (this AND company no longer exists, apprently).

Installation is off 5 floppies including a Windows "setup.exe".

The application runs fine on Windows 3.1, 95 and 98.

On XP Pro (and on W2K) it comes up with an error "Internal Error 33400" (which I have researched fruitlessly on Google) and goes no further.

Unfortunately, OUP have not released a successor version to this excellent database other than a little Mickey Mouse thing which is quite worthless.

The databases are encoded as ???.AND files which are obviously proprietary.

This is probably a DOS call in 32 bit where XP has no DOS function. Any work-around?

Running the executable in W95 or W98 emulation mode brings no benefit.

Any thoughts please, anyone ?

Thanks for your advice - both of you.

Unfortunately, all emulation endeavours as also "help > Getting Programs to run under XP" still fail to load this program. Do you know any way to successfully deal with "internal error 33400" when starting the EXE file?

MS website doesn't help either.

I have no idea about "internal error 33400" other than what was mentioned in the earlier links. It would make a good crossword clue.

Isn't Tek-Tips wonderful? The world is full of Good Samaritans - it just takes the Internet to flush them out.

Any good I zip up the folder containing my Oxford Dictionary of Quotations files, Dlls, EXE and all and sending the zip to you and see whether you have any luck in getting it to run? The bonus is that you would have a superb reference tool if we can get it out of its moribund condition on XP?

They once delivered very much compressed databases, like the dutch phonebook on cd-rom, and postal codes on floppy etc.
That line of business was 'retired', I seem to remember, but that happened years ago, but I'm not quite sure.

They're into geo-data and mapping software these days.

See if you can find somebody much closer with a XP machine and try it on that. Speaking from rural Australia (with rusty phone lines) and slow dial up, I don't fancy the Oxford Dictionary being downloaded, but thank you for the offer.

My standard of crosswords are from children's puzzle books with pictures of animals as the clues, I'm real good at them.

Your problem with this program is not as silly as not having the correct security permissions for access to and/or create files or folders, is it?

No, logged in as ADMINISTRATOR and off and on in all other personae. It's not that. Other apps install and run seamlessly.
Linney - it's reassuring to know that even though Australians have no idea about Rugby and Cricket, their crossword puzzling abilities are clearly awesome.

worked. Got their phone number, called and waited on the phone for over 15 minutes without a tech guy coming on line. Eventually, I put the phone down but have now written to their CEO so we'll see what happens.
