I recently lost a file because I reformatted my computer and forgot to back this file up. As soon as I realized my mistake, I panicked and sought data recovery software, and found GetBackData. As I was loath to disconnect my hard drive (i use a laptop) and slave it to another computer, I wrote an image of the hard drive onto an external drive and decided to hope for the best. However, when I run scans, all I find is the files that are already readily available on the drive. What am I doing wrong?

I think you need to save the image as a backup and work with the original disk. Sounds like the image only contains 'visible' files, not a sector by sector copy.

I'm pretty sure it's a sector by sector image. Are you familiar with the GetBackData program?

No, I'm not familiar with it but if it shows up nothing but files visible from Windows Explorer ...

Is there an option to scan a formatted drive or similar? That's the way to go - you need to look beyond the files that are still registered in the FATs.
