I've already read the installation guide and checked every step I had made.
But when I access here,
"asp error occurs.

The error i get is this:
"java.lang.nullpointexception/learningspce5/global.asa, line268"

The Learning Space 5.0 is running on the following configuration:
Windows Advanced Server 2000 + Service pack 2 + all update versions JVM and MDAC(2.6)and Oracle 8.1

i have tried the IP instead of hostname, use TCP/IP instead of NPIPE for database connection,"Create a LearningSpace 5 database,” option during the install(page 23 of the installation guide.

I think i have figured out the problem but i do not know how to FIX it, am unable to "Create the Data Source Connection" on the installion guide(p24 & 25) i do every step until step 8 that's where i get that am not able to connect to the database.

is there a way that i can fix that problem and how i can fix the problem and how to test if Learning Space connects to my database.thanks i would really appreciate it any suggestions or solutions.

Hello,
I have almost the same problem at the time I want to access to LS5 admin page. I have the next configuration: Windows 2000 Server + Service Pack 2 + MDAC 2.6 SP1 + Oracle 8.1.7 running on Sun Solaris.
With this configuration I have the nex error:
Technical Information
(for support personnel)

Error Type:
Java Exception (0x80004005)
java.lang.NullPointerException
/LearningSpace5/global.asa, line 274

Browser Type:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT; Airtel)

Page:
GET
/learningspace5/default.asp?ui=admin

I don´t know what it´s wrong with it, I am thinking that the error is that I am using 2000 Server instead of 2000 Advanced Server. I have not real clue, but I f I discover anything or you do I hope we keep in touch.

Regards

Check to see that the logon for the DSN is correct in the LS5 Database Utility. Like for SQL they use "sa" for the password, but the DB utility sometimes has a default PW

Just a note -- make sure the "sa" account HAS a password, then create a second account to use with LearningSpace and set that in the LearningSpace Db utilities. Leaving the sa account open is a huge security hole.

Hi,

The Global.asa problem is a little tricky, as I think that is where the main LearningSpace classes are instantiated, so if just about ANYTHING goes wrong, then you get that error.
For instance, we got that error when writing our own LearningSpace components, and it was nothing to do with a Database connection there.

HOWEVER, generally speaking a global.asa error means that there was an error creating the database connection.

Check your DSN. Make sure you have the correct Oracle client version. Test the DSN that you are connecting with, and make sure you can access the LearningSpace tables.

To test you could try something like:
Start sqlplus
connect to the database
select * from users;

The user you have set up in the DSN might not have access rights to the LearningSpace tables, so when you check the connection on the DSN it may connect just fine, but then not be able to read/write to the appropriate tables.
Are you using LS5.01? LS5.01 is *much* better than LS5.

I have has a very similar experience with the following error, while using an existing database.

The operation you attempted was not successful.
Module.handleEvent() - java.lang.NullPointerException

Java Exception error '800004005'
java.lang.NullPointerException
/learningSpace5/global.asa, line 276

--------------------

after much debate with lotus/IBM the only thing that worked was to
create a new empty database
DO NOT use the learningspace tool to add the schema
use the SQL export utility to copy the tables from the old database to the new one, using the SA account.
create a new ODBC connectot
tell LS to use the new connector.

reboot, wait 5 minutes and viola.
