My external Seagate backup drive on my NetWare 4.11 server failed and was replaced with another drive from same manufacturer. Now I have problem getting the 4.11 server to work when the new Seagate b-up drive attached to it.

Sympton is when the server is initiating there is this long peeping sound and the server freezes. I think there are some installation steps missing when attaching the bk-up drive to the server. Can't figure out what are the necessary steps.

Would appreciate help from experts with the following issues:
1. what do I do to get my NW 4.11 server to recognise the new Seagate bk-up drive. Step-by-step instructions, please!

2. Previously Seagate Backup Exec version 8 was installed in the NW 4.11 server. Now, do I need to RE-install the drivers for the bk-up drive given that the same Seagate product is used.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Steve

You shouldn't need to re-install.

On boot-up, scsi scan. Does the scan detect the new device. It could be a termination or id problem. Lee Smith

The previous time the drive was connected to the server, it was detected (I think, can't remember exactly). Now the drive was detached. Sorry I can't try to connect the drive to the server now (today), so I would not be able to confirm the answer above. But I think it did. Remembered there was long beeping sound from the server when the drive was connected then.

Lets say my assumption is correct, how do I rectify the problems you specified earlier?

It depends if it is seen in the scan. If it isn't it is a hardware problem.
1. Have u rebooted since it was attached?
2. Make sure the scsi card has not popped out of slot when you have re-atteched device.
3. Check scsi ID is not conflicting with any existing device.
4. Did the original external device have a terminator on, if so has that been attached to the new device.

It really does all hang on if the device is seen on re-boot.
If it is then we can start on Netware.

Lee's absolutely correct on this one. If it ends up being detected by the server, and it's in BackupExec that you are having trouble, you may have to go into Option under the Job Manager and select partition management to see the new drive. I have had occasions where even if I set the ID the same as the old drive, with firmware updates, the drives detect slightly different (to BackupExec) and you have to use partition management to "reactivate" the replacement.

Good Luck,

Mike
