Hi there

I am in desperate need of help. I am working on a 36-page InDesign document which is based on an imported Word/RTF file. The index entries are created in this word document. For some reason every time I click on the icon to generate the index it crashes InDesign. I am desperate. I have a deadline in three hours and I just don't know what to do to resolve it. Any suggestions??

Thanks.

What version of ID and what version of Word? ID2.0 does not support Word 7 or higher.

While it will import indexes created in Word, it imports them as text only. To create an index in ID, you need to manually index the words/entries.

First Shift + F8 to open the Index toolbox.

Now highlight the entries, and then click the icon on the menu that is a square with the corner folder up to add the entry. After you complete the index entries, then you should be able to generate an index without a problem.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Hi there

Thanks very kindly for your response and for your help. I think I worked it out as being the fact that I unlinked the word document too soon and it couldn't generate the index properly. It hasn't done it again since thank goodness.

But thank you again.

Thanks for all the helpful answers about index! I work in InD CS and need desperately your help:

How to import a separate index file (several hundred words, which was created later than the original doc file) in order to create an index for a InDesign document of 350 pages.

I just cannot find the way to import an index, only to create manually a new one! Is this really so?? I have the document with indexed words, but cannot find the way to import it.
Really thankful for help!!!
