My card is Gefroce4 mx 440. My OS is XP. Here is an example of one of the problems.
I right click on the desktop and bring up the display properties.
Next I select the 'Desktop' tab.
In the 'Background' window I select the first default XP background called 'Ascent'(Looks like a mountain with the moon).
Above, is the example of what my desktop would look like if I selected this background. The problem is that the graphics are all blocky with criss cross white lines.
Now, this is the weird part, if I select 'Apply' to set this as my default background, the example picture goes perfect as it should! If I preview a different background and then go back to Ascent, it's gone all messy again.
This appears to happen with any JPEG in the list. The other file formats are ok. If I go into the directory where the background are kept, all pictures display correctly as thumbnails. The problem also appears to be with jpeg's on web pages.
Any advice would be great as this I started to make me go grey. I have already tried reloading the OS.
cheers.

Sounds like a driver problem.
Look for new drivers which are suitable for WinXP.

Kocky.

Thanks for you relpy Kocky but I have already tried several relases of the Detinator drivers from Nvidia.
cheers.

XP has pretty good native drivers...tried going back to them?
If you have a Via chipset, try newer chipset drivers.
Careful with that one...some have adverse happenings when applying the newer ones...some have reported it fixed problems.
Whatever chipset your motherboard features, have you loaded them?
Another way of testing is to Start/Run/dxdiag and run the tests...if any fails try disabling then reenabling them...sometimes this fixes it.

Ok thanks - i should have thought of getting the latest motherboard drivers before. I will try them tonight after the kids have gone to bed. The native XP drive for the graphics card gives the same problem. i've already been done the directx route.
Thanks again.

O and sorry yes i do have via.
cheers.

Event Viewer also may be giving you clues...right click on My Computer and choose manage...look in the Applications logs...I know they'll be cryptic...but you'll get clues as to the file that caused the problem...(nv or anything similar clues you to a video driver issue)
And, lastly, a couple of links to help decipher Event Viewer errors:

(also helpful for XP users)

Hey I really appreciate your advice and thanks......
That didn't seem to work though. I've upgraded the via drivers to the latest, tried different video card drivers, reset my bois to use 'Fail safe defaults', checked in event viewer and the only messages seem to be at shutdown and boot up time. As I said before I really appreciate you trying to help but I suppose the ultimate thing for me to do would be to swap my card for an identical one. As this is too expensive and I don’t want to take the chance of buying another card which won’t work, I will probably go buy something different and stick this one in my Linux machine.
cheers.
