i am trying to install a bfg tech geforce 5500fx graphics card in an elitegroup mainboard p4vmm2 running xp pro. i am not sure of the exact version of this board. elitegroup web site says the board version # is next to the model #. there is nothing next to model # that corresponds to any versions they have posted. geforce said i need to update the bios and to disable the onboard video to get this card to work(i just get a black screen when i put card in). the current bios is ami vers 1.21.10, string # 62-0515-001131-00101111-040201-via-p6-p4vmm2-. the curent bios menu does not have an option to disable on board video. the agp setting still lets the onboard work when setting primary video to agp. i have also tried disabling onboard in device manager. i have contacted elite group tech support and have not gotten a reply to find exact board version # for the correct bios update to correct this(if there is one). i would appreciate any suggestions!

Martin, Thanks for your quick reply. I don't think that the PSU was/is bad. Both the old and the new PSU will spin the fans for a sec or two and then die. I have been reading other reports here and I am curious about the CPU. Since I found that the Heatsink had been broken loose and was dangling free, I am curious as to how long these Processors survive without a Heatsink of Fan?? Can't they fireup for at least 5 mins?? I, like one (or more) other visitor, am on a limited budget. So, arbitrary substitution is not really an option. Don't know how the local 'Puter store would react if I purchased and kept returning stuff. The current MB is one that has the ability to use DDR or SDRAM. Has two sockets for each. Naturally, can not use both at same time. My horrors are replacing the MB and then trying to get her WinXP running again. I don't think that I will be able to get the same MB and even at that I believe that the signature will be different. This will require a call to Microsoft ... I think. Been away from this for a while and just needed someone to talk to... corrections and encouragements are appreciated. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem and found the answer. The video card needs to be a GeForce Ti4600 128 meg or the like. I installed the GeForce 5200 FX and the same thing happened - no boot - no screen display. I then installed the Ti4600 and wham the computer booted right up and found the card. I then downloaded the lastest drivers for NVidia and everything is awesome.

Have a Nice Day.

kzuser, I have gotten myself in a delima. I removed the mother boad from the tower and forgot to mark down the front panel connections for the power switch, reset switch and the Power and HD leds. I have a diagram for a P4VMM2 that I got off of the Internet but it doesn't appear to have the pins labled correctly. Due to some other variances I'm positive that the picture I have is of another version. You appear to have the same version that I have. The connection in question is the Panel2 jack. The info I have shows the Power sw as pins 6 - 8 and the Reset as 5 - 7 with the HDD led as 1 - 3 and a SPD led as 2 - 4. I don't have an SPD led but do have a power LED. If you, or anyone else reading this, can shed any light at all on these connectins it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chuck

thanx Playing4Fun i can suggest the Ti4600 to my friend's son and maybe we will give it another try.

TO: chucktr. this is my neighbor's son computer that i was working on. so i do not have it here to look at settings for you. i will try to stop at thier house within the next day or two and take a look.

kzuser, Wait. Don't bother your neighbor. I requested info from you AND ECS, the compnay that made the board. To my surprise the company responded and I was able to get the correct info. I now have the board hooked up. Thanks so muchly for your time ... and conversation. If you or anyone else needs the info, it can be found at:
This has the proper layout... embarassingly .. the pin-out for Panel2 is the same as the other one, which I thought was wrong.
