Why would you get garbage characters in folder and file names when exploring an otherwise uncorrupted FAT16 drive in Win98?

Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Appearance, select Icon in the Item window, and make sure 'MS Sans Serif(Western)' appears in the Font box.
If not, then select it, and click OK.

If that font already appears in the Font box, then it is probably corrupted. It can be replaced if you have the Win 98 installation CD.
Go to Start/Run, type msinfo32, click OK/Tools/System File Checker, check 'Extract one file...', type sserife.fon in the box, click Start, type X:\WIN98 in the 'Restore from' box (where X is your CD-ROM drive's letter), type C:\Windows\Fonts in the 'Save file in' box, insert your Windows 98 installation CD, click OK, say Yes if a prompt asks if you want to overwrite the existing file, click OK when it says the file has been successfully extracted, and close the 'Windows 98 CD-ROM' window .

Sorry

It isnt a font issue. Its always folders and files that are one level below the root of that drive.

It happens on a drive that is connected to my secondary master cable. I am frequently changing drives and it always comes up as drive D, although when there is no drive connected to that cable, my CD comes up as drive D.

I think it is 1 of 2 things. Either Win98 is confused with me constantly changing drive letters and gives me garbage when I boot up, or there is a copy protection on the drive that does this

Do you have any additional new and relevant information to add before I possibly waste my time again researching your problem, or does your 2nd post contain everything that you can think of?

It's ok if you need more time to make sure all relevant data is included. I can wait.
