Games freeze up and then returns to desktop.

Hey Everybody,
Having problems playing games. Soon into a game (several of them) it will freeze up and return to my desktop. One game gives an "Access Failure at adress XXXXX" before it freezes up. Other than games the computer runs perfect surfing the web ect. I have a win 98, pent II 450, 128 ram, with soundblaster soundcard and Voodoo 3000 pci video. Device Manager looks good.I have reinstalled video card, downloaded latest drivers, and downloaded latest direct x. I have swapped out video card with a voodoo banshee and also swapped out cdrom and still came up with same errors. What else can I try? Does this sound like a hardware problem? Thanks in Advance.

Here's something to try;

If the game has any display settings that resemble "back buffer in system memory" disable it.

I have had the same sort of problem, -- when ever you switched from the game to a setup or menu screen in the game it would tank back to desktop, or even on load it would randomly do this.

Also make sure the video card is not given any system memory in your CMOS. ie video bios, etc.

A bunch of my Lucas Arts games did this.

Had a similar problem but was not being returned to the desktop, I had a look inside the case and found that the Video card was running extremely hot. I added an extra fan and have had no problems since
