Hi!

At my work, we have 3 G3s - OS9 connetcted on a network.
We are getting a G5 that has to join this file sharing network.

How will OSX work with OS9 on G3s?
What about software (Photoshop 6 & 7, Illustrator 8 & 9, Quark 4.1, ATM Deluxe 4.6, Netscape 7.....), will all that work on G5 - OSX?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

I don't believe there should be any problems adding a G5 to your current network. Regarding software though, I know Photoshop 7 is OSX compatible. If the other software are not OSX compatible, the G5 can still run them in Classic.

Photoshop and Illustrator currently have OS X native versions, but older versions run fine under classic. There is a built in web browser (not commenting on quality!) but you'll need to cross grade from ATM to Suitcase as it isn't supported.

Thanks for answers... in meantime, I heard that Quark 4.1 will nor run at all on G5 (not even in classic mode), but Quark 6 will work. Is that true?

Thanks

I am not in the position to validate that rumor but it is well-known that Quark does not run perfectly in Classic mode even on a G4. Keep in mind that Quark 6 was created primarily to catch up with the new OSX operating system. The Quark programmers have been focusing on developing for an operating system that has been in use for a few years. How long do you think it will take them to certify their code to run on a processor that came out a few months ago?

See the forums at adobe.com to see how InDesign is taking to G5. Quark seems to be limping on its last leg. You may want to consider a new page layout application.
