Having problems and need to "optimize" this computer.

PowerMac G4
OSX 10.2
Dual 1.25GHz Processors
1GB DDR RAM
160GB Hard Drive
Super Drive.

Computer is slow to open programs like Illustrator 10, Photoshop 7 and Quark 6. Computer will freeze when saving some Illustrator files.

Is there some utilites to help out this Mac? Maybe some stuff needs to be cleaned up? The system has been up and running for about 2 months now.

I've heard some speed improvements are noticed with the 10.2.8 update. I never timed my computer to tell a difference.

How slow are we talking here?

Why is everyone in this forum responding to me as picklefish?

A short while ago I was noticing my G4's responses were slowing down. I spotted a tip in MacAddict mag regarding a "built-in" file maintenance program and decided to give it a try. I was truly surprised to find that it removed the inertia my machine was suffering from.
You might try the following:
1.Reboot your Mac.
2. Start it back up in "single-user" mode (this is the built-in Unix programming you never see unless you "ask for it")...you acquire it by holding down Command-S until you reach a whole screen-full of "white-on-black" Unix "talk".
3. When it finally stops printing and leaves you a blinking curser at the bottom of the screen type in /sbin/fsck -y ( I didn't accidently leave a space before the "-y" ....it is supposed to be there! :-D
Hit RETURN and you will see it run through a series of tests, reporting any errors it finds and then fixing them. If it should find errors rerun the program until you get the OK "seal of approval"!Once that is achieved, type in "reboot" and you will return your machine to normal operation.
This is always there....so you might want to use it every month or so....just to keep an eye on things! Hope it helps! [peace]

Thanks coathook. I will give that a try. But i have talked to apple after doing the software update to os 10.2.8 and they said that this update is bad and that i have to re-install the OS.

Thanks again for the replies.
