I am a consulting engineer working on a hospital project where we have built a new office building that needs to be connected to the hospitals switch. I am new to the PBX world, so forgive me if my questions beg more questions.

I need some very basic help on connecting an EPN to a G3SI.

1. Can the EPN be remotely located from the G3SI or does
it have to be in the same room?
2. If remote is ok, can it be connected via fiber optic
(number of strands and type MM or SM)?
3. Are there certain features on the G3SI that will not
be transferred to the EPN, like music-on-hold?
4. Can the G3SI support more than one EPN?
5. What is an approximate material cost of an EPN?

Forgive my rookie questions, if there is more info I need to provide please let me know and I will try and get it.

Thanks,

1. Can the EPN be remotely located from the G3SI or does
it have to be in the same room?
Remotely located is just fine.

2. If remote is ok, can it be connected via fiber optic
(number of strands and type MM or SM)?
An SI EPN can ONLY be connected via fiber as follows:
9823A Transceiver - Multi Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 1 Mile
9824B Transceiver - Multi Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 4.7 Miles

R10 and up:
R300 Transceiver - Single Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 22 Miles

NOTE - The transceivers MUST match at both ends of the fiber link and you will need Expansion Interface circuit packs as well.

3. Are there certain features on the G3SI that will not
be transferred to the EPN, like music-on-hold?
Eveyting that is availble in the PPN is available in the EPN.

4. Can the G3SI support more than one EPN?
EPN support is as follows:
CSI - 0 EPN
SI - 2 EPN
R - 43 EPN
S8700 - 64 EPN

NOTE - If the number of EPN units is greater than one they must be direct connected to each other and the PPN.

EPN cabinet style can be either an SCC or an MCC cabinet.

5. What is an approximate material cost of an EPN?
Depends on the cabinet and transceivers being used.

I have re-answered question 2 in a little more specific fashion.

2. If remote is ok, can it be connected via fiber optic
(number of strands and type MM or SM)?
An SI EPN can ONLY be connected via fiber as follows:

R9 and down:
9823A Transceiver - Multi Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 1 Mile
9824B Transceiver - Multi Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 4.7 Miles

R10 and up:
9823A Transceiver - Multi Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 1 Mile
9824B Transceiver - Multi Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 4.7 Miles
R300 Transceiver - Single Mode Fiber - 62.5 micron - 22 Miles

NOTE - The transceivers MUST match at both ends of the fiber link and you will need Expansion Interface circuit packs as well.

The other option would be to set up a separate phone system in the other building and DCS it to the main phone system.
The EPN would probably be the best over all, but could be more expensive.

Additional information for Question 2: If you have Standard or High Reliability configuration you need 2 strands of fiber. If you have Critical Reliability you need 4 strands of fiber.

Standard Reliability = no duplication
High Reliability = Duplicate processors only
Critical Reliability = processors and connectivity redundant

If you have a PPN and 2 EPNs they are connected in a triangular configuration.

The attached link will take you to the V7 System Description. Though dated, it is a good source of basic information, most of which hasn't changed.

Thanks for all the info, it is a great help!

I do know that the existing switch is a v6, not sure if that matters or changes any previous responses.

I would like some more info on the DCS option. Once again I am new to the PBX arena and apologize for my simple questions.
