G# Blue & White installing os10.4 DVD problem

I'm trying to get 10.4 on a Blue and white G3 that is currently has OS10.1 on it. I have an external DVD reader that I can get as far as the installer DVD saying now it will restart to do the install. It then restarts but does not find the external DVD reader. I'm stuck, I've tried all the tricks I can think of. Help appreciated.

Is the G3 up to required system specs for 10.4?

Apple offers 10.4 optionally on CD.

Do you have or can you borrow a DVD-equipped Mac with firewire? If so, you could connect it to your G3, booted in target disk mode and install from the 2nd Mac.

Important question... Is the DVD reader firewire or USB? The Blue and Whites can not boot off of a USB device.

I assume you have other Mac's (G4 or G5). First, make sure you have all the firmware updates for your G3. Then clone one of the other Tiger OS onto a Firewire drive or if too lazy, reboot the Tiger system with T key held down so it looks like a very big Firewire Drive. Plug a firewire cable between the two systems. See if Startup System Preference "sees" the Tiger drive as a bootable image. If so, check it and reboot. Or reboot holding down opt key.

Make sure you have the latest CCC 3b or SuperDuper! on the Tiger drive and run it to clone onto the B&W G3.

If Tiger doesn't support your cpu, your bootup process will fail. You may want to spend a few bucks and upgrade the processor to a 1GHz G4.

2 of the greatest features of Mac are: You can boot off Firewire drive. And the same version of Tiger can run on a whole slew of Mac's. Try to do that on a Dell!
