We are running CM 6.3 on our CM core servers.

Recently we were advised by our BP to upgrade the firmware on our G-450 media gateways to 39.12.0 in preparation for upgrading to CM 7.13. Since the firmware update several of the G-450 media gateways have been randomly resetting with no pattern.

Is it possible the firmware update is causing this problem.

Since you mention WAN are you using WAN optimizers? Sometimes the silent assassin.

wpetilli,

We are not running a WAN optimizer on our network.

However we found differences in the MG LAN port settings. Of the 6 MGs 3 are set to 100/Full and 3 are set to 1G/Full. The 3 MGs that are resetting are the ones set to 1G/Full.

Researching Avaya documentation and user forum postings there are differences of opinion on LAN port settings on G-450 MGs. Avaya states auto/auto and other sources say lock to 100/Full. Based on our MG reset issue it appears 100/Full does not cause issues.

Which is correct?

Depends what year you`re reading and when the world figured out gigE autonegotiate. Can`t imagine it being a problem personally, but maybe a L2 switching wizard might say different.

Ever get your bookend capture?

kyle555,

Our bookend capture failed and we are attempting a second capture and there appears to be no consensus on the MG duplex and port speed settings. Out LAN team recommends gigE auto.

kyle555,

We have changed the media gateways that have been resetting from auto negotiate 1G to 100/Full as three other media gateways configured to 100/Full running the 39.12.0 have not reset.

Additionally we found one of the locations has the 10/5 port configured to a trunk-port instead of an access port and the redundant 10/6 port is not patched to a LAN port.

I will post results of our monitoring.

I'm no network engineer, but I can repeat what our network engineer lectured me on... the switch ports should match what the equipment is expecting. If the switch port is set to auto, then the gateway should be set to auto. If the switch is set to auto and the gateway is set to 100/FULL you can have problems. It doesn't make sense to me... that's the whole point of auto-negotiation, right?? Apparently it doesn't work so well in the switch world.

All,

The gateway reset issue appears to have been caused by upgrading the firmware version from 36.18.0 to 39.12.0 before the CM core servers were upgraded from 6.3 to 7.1. Since rolling back to version 36.18.0 the problem has stopped.

We will wait until the night of the cutover of the CM core servers to 7.1 before updating the G-450 gateway firmware.

Very painful lesson for us.
