All,

Just finished setting up a vpn...
Have a 3 Windows XP workgroup behind a Netgear FVS318 Router. Remote PC is Windows XP - PRO with ProSafe VPN Client...directly connected to cable modem. No Router at the remote site.
I can successfully connect from the remote computer...tunnel comes up. Can then ping each of the remote computers by name (did an LMNHOST import on the remote pc) and the remote network ip.
Problem is, I can't see any of the 3 office computers in Windows Explorer! The 3 computers have the same workgroup name as the rmeote computer. All I see is the Workgroup icon and the remote PC underneath. Can't "add a printer" from the any of the office computers either. FVS318 (v2.2)has Netbios enabled in VPN Settings. Netbios is enabled on remote PC. Like I say, the tunnel comes up.....just can't see any of the 3 office computers or any of their printers in Explorer. This is a problem as we need to share drives etc.
Any ideas???
Thanks,

Hi Steve. I had a similar problem with Contivity VPN Client while traversing a NetGear FWG114P firewall. On Windows2000, the solution for me was to use the net command as follows:

net use \\sharename\shareddirectoryname *

YOu will then e prompted for a password. I found that if I did not password protect my file shares it would not work.

Also, the net command will allow you to specify a permanent mount point so you only need to do thsi once as follows:

net use * \\sharename\shareddirectoryname *

or

net use e: \\sharename\shareddirectoryname *

To mount on next available drive or drive e: specifically

Good luck!

Does ProSafe client support NetBIOS?
I know SafeNet doesn't, even though the FVS318 (allegedly) does. Since the client ignores the NetBIOS broadcasts,it never gets communicated to your home machine. I ended up doing about the same as icezebra recommended, except that I am accessing a domain, so the authentication situation is a bit different.

Check the ProSafe documentation and if it doesn't support "NetBIOS over IP", then you'll have to live with your LMHOSTS file or look into WINS. You SHOULD be able to connect to remote printers by using net use as well (you just map an lpt: port on your local machine to the IP ADDRESS and share name on the remote network)

icezebra,

Thanks for the info!!!

I am not familar with the Net use command. I'll try to find some info on microsoft's site though.

Again, thanks for the info!

shaferbus,

Thanks.

ProSafe does support Netbios over IP, at least that's what Netgear told me.

I just need to learn how to use net use. I am not familar with that command.

Thanks again,

Net commands are well worth learning. An easy way to start is you can see a list of all available net commands by typing net /?. Hope this helps. (Use net commands for using dos printers on. Great utility.)
