Hello all.

I have a 3x8DS and a StarTalk Flash 4 (2-port). I tried for hours to get the VM to work to no avail. Inactive features, DN didn't answer, etc. Serial port didn't show any failures, but it just wasn't working. Switched punchdowns several times, and pretty much did everything I could think of. Finally got it to work for a bit, but then the features went inactive again, although I could call the DN directly.

Then I found this board and read about the capacitor which keeps the NvRAM alive and I shorted it. The Flash became available and I went through the config. I followed the Install Guide, but there were two additional screens: SN, followed by a serial number, and "Key:" that was asking for input.

I have a terrible feeling that there were keycodes in the unit that were now gone. I have absolutely no clue where to find them (they're probably long gone). What further convinces me this is the case is that although the manual I have shows how to set up AA and CCR, when I try to select those options from the admin menu I get "Not allowed". Soon after the 900-seriws features became "inactive" again. I don't think I let the unit sit long enough after I drained the cap. Could that have corrupted something?

Does this sound like it's a case of wiped keycodes, or a corrupt bit of memory? If it is a keycode matter, does anyone know if I can somehow get them back from Nortel with unit serial numbers, etc?

Thanks.

Yes, a case of wiped keycodes. Sounds like you have a Flash Lite that was upgraded to a Flash. You should be able to get the key code back from Nortel as long as you can determine the Flash ID number.

Thanks, Marvin. I got the keycode back from Nortel.

Good job. I really cringe when the ole shortin' the cap advice is given.
