I am fairly new to SNMP and have just started to do some research into the subject. Is SNMP just a reporting tool or can you actually manage system resources on remote PC's with it. For example, we have printers that are hooked up directly to the network, so if a printer queue jams on a local machine, i have to go all the way down to that machine to clear the queue. Can SMNP let me manage this type of resource or am I thinking of some other management software?

ur printers will have to have an snmp client enabled and you'll have to find the right string to send to clear the print queue....

porbably quicker and easier to get the software from the printer suppliers and clear you're queues that way..

Hi All

First of All Sorry ( I am the Founder of this Forum and this is the first time i am posting...... :{ )

Any way Answering above question.......

SNMP is best useful for reporting Error and updating firmware or setting from a SNMP Management Console (like HP Open View....or any other freeware stuff)

and for thing like Spooler reset ....... it is easy to do with OS cmd

Cheers

Anith

Anith, do you know about free SNMP manager, replacing or trying to do the job of HP OpenView or Tivoli Netview ?
Which free products in the market are doing this job ?
Thanks
