Hello, is it possible to add external addresses to distribution lists in exchange 2000? I currently have no problem creating Distribution Lists inside the domain. But I can't figure out how to create a DL that also contains external addresses (ie. hotmail.com,yahoo.com).
I know that it is possible to do this in Outlook and create a personal DL in your CONTACTS folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Ben

You need to create Contacts for each external address user in Active Directory Users & Computers. You can then add the Contacts into the Distribution Group. Basically when making the contact call name it something like johnsmith as you will get a conflict if you already have specified a user name John Smith in AD (cannot have 2 objects with same name).

Do you need DL to mass mail or are you trying to give exterenal addresses to users?

Claudek,

I did that but I'm not able to send mail to my external accounts. Internal works fine. Funny thing, when I use the "Send Mail" utility from the AD mmc to the distribution list, both internal AND external accounts receive the mail. But when I send an email from outlook to the DL, only internal accounts receive it?

If you have created the DL with the contacts in them (ie each contact being an external email address) and have sent a test mail via Outlook, the mail should be sent to your SMTP queue. Check there to see if it is stuck and by right-clicking and selecting properties will tell you what the error is.
You can also use the "Request a Delivery receipt for this message" which can be found under Tools->options when creating your email. This should tell you if the message has been relayed. As you getting any NDRs?

I was able to go into my Contacts, select Actions, New Distribution List and create a group selecting members from my existing personal contacts (outside email addresses). Tried a test email and it worked like a charm.
Ben, did you ever get this to work?

thanks for asking, and sorry for not replying. I ended up using the scenario that I posted above. The DL works great from a personal contacts folder. I was just hoping to use it from the GAL. Even if it is possible, I just ended up creating the local contacts DL within the user's outlook, and then delegating her contacts via outlook permissions to the other 2 users that need it. They seem to be happy.

thanks,
Ben
