I was preparing a new server for 2003 and did as suggested (installed nt4.0 on new server made it a bdc brought it up and promoted to pdc then upgraded to 2003) Foolishly I installed Active directory and then all my troubles began. I took the 2003 off the network and promoted my nt server back to PDC but....everything works for internet access except FTP which works intermittently. (right after I reboot the server briefly sometimes)

My environment is a multihomed NT server with DHCP but no DNS (use my isp's)running MS proxy server 2.0. My 12 users run 2000 professional or XP.
I can FTP fine from the server at a command prompt. But running reflection FTP or command prompt FTP does not work on clients. The other application that will not work is REDI-PLUS but this uses ftp too.

Thank you

I had problems with outbound FTP connections using Windows Server 2003. Never found any forums or information from Microsoft regarding this, BUT, upgrading to SP1 immediately resolved my FTP issue. *Scratches Chin*

Good Luck

Cinema, he took his 2003 server off the network, so that really doesn't apply...

Anyways, a few questions.

1. Are they clients trying to FTP to your NT box, or to the outside world?
2. What kind of router/firewall do you have?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

It is my outbound FTP connections. We use proxy server 2.0 and then go through a netopia router. It really seems like a caching issue because if I reboot the server it will work for awhile.

hmmm

Sure sounds like a Proxy issue. Can you not use the proxy server settings on your desktops ftp client, and just let those clients go straight out through the router? Or do the desktops not see the router because they face one network card on the server, and the other network card on the server faces the router? What problems were you having that required you to take down the 2003 server?

The multihomed machine makes not using the proxy a problem. I tried diddling the DNS settings this morning and so far all is working. In the advanced lan setting under the DNS tab I clicked append these DNS suffixes and added the domain name. Everyone is working now. Weird. Thanks for your posts.
(I took down the 2003 server because with it up no one could connect to the internet) I am now going to start the migration process over again with some outside help.
