Hello,

I have an issue someone maybe able to solve.

I have Val Boards in my PBX.

When I started with the company about a month ago I found out the VAL Manager Software had been shipped back with some leased equipment.

I understand that the announcements can be FTP to another file for recovery if something should happen.

Can you explain how to do this?

Shawn

Announcement Backup Procedure via FTP

1. From the SAT terminal or ASA using remote access the Definity/MultiVantage platform and at the Command: prompt type ‘enable filesystem board UUCSS login LoginID Password’ (where the UUCSS is the location of the VAL Board, and you determine the LoginID to use and the Password to use). This command will enable the file system on the VAL board and make the files it contains available to anyone who knows the login id and the password. NOTE: after each session you should disable filesystem to prevent someone from accessing and damaging this system.

2. On a PC located on the customer’s network launch a FTP session. Type the command ftp VAL-IP-ADDRESS (where val-ip-address is the IP address of the VAL board such as 142.150.42.50). At the ‘Username’ prompt type in the same loginID you used when you enabled the file system on the VAL board. Next at the ‘Password’ prompt use the same password you used when you enabled the file system on the VAL board in step 1. The system will respond with ‘User logged in’.

3. When you log in you are in the /annc directory which is where all the announcements are filed. On your PC’s command screen type the command ‘ls’ to display a list of the announcement files on the VAL board. board (HINT: if there are very many of these files you might want to write or copy them to a document rather than try to memorize the list).

4. Next, at the ftp prompt type the command ‘get filename’ where ‘filename’ is the name of the announcement you want to backup to your PC. The announcement will be copied to the directory on your PC that you were in when you started your FTP session. These files will have a .wav extension. You should ‘get’ all the announcement files from the VAL board since you last backed them up, or changed the announcement. You can then store this copy on your PC, on a floppy, CD, ZIP, or other storage device.

If you want to get all of the files at one time use the ftp command 'mget *.wav' and the ftp session will prompt you (y/n) for each file before it moves it to your PC.

You can also use some of the more windows friendly FTP programs such as WS-FTP or Cute-FTP which can be downloaded from
I use WS-FTP and it works great. This way you do not have to use all the "get" and "put" commands.

We're trying to upload the latest firmware release to our VAL board. And maybe I'm just being dumb here, but I can't enable the filesystem...

"enable filesystem board UUCSS login LoginID Password"

I'm not sure what to put in for 'login' ftp_username ftp_password" I've tried my login and password, but it doesn't work. I've tried to hit F3 to just enable but no good either...

Thanks all,
Chris

"enable filesystem board UUCSS login LoginID Password"
What you're doing with this command is establishing a logon ID and password to use in upcoming steps. The ID and password does NOT have to be your current login information.

For example, if my VAL board is at location [red]01a03[/red], and I wanted my ID to be [blue]dallas[/blue] with the password [purple]cowboys[/purple], my command would be enable filesystem board [red]01a03[/red] login [blue]dallas[/blue] [purple]cowboys[/purple]

Your response will be the message "Command successfully completed" at the bottom of the screen.

Note: your ID must be between 3-6 characters in length, your password must be between 7-11 characters in length.

Thanks - I kept forgetting to put in 'login'.

And just to confirm, when I go to upload this it will take the board out of service - correct?

Thanks again,
Chris

I think so (for a very brief moment) but I honestly can't remember. You can pick up a very good PDF document here that goes into all of the firmware instructions step-by-step for all of the different upgrade-able boards.

It will only go out of service if you upgrade the firmware but only for about 1-2 minutes. If all you are doing is moving the WAV files to and from the board nothing happens to take the card out of service.

Hey all,

I'm back at it... I've enabled the filesystem with login & password:
enable filesystem board 01B12 login denver broncos
Command successfully completed

-however when I ftp to my VAL board, I enter:

C:\Documents and Settings\Desktop>ftp 192.168.1.21
Connected to 192.168.1.21.
220 r3ccama FTP server (SunOS 5.7) ready.
User (192.168.1.21:(none)): denver
331 Password required for denver.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.

But it keeps telling me Login failed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

There are only two possibilities that I can think of:

1. You "fat-fingered" typing in the password; either on the ASA side or on the FTP side. Enter the command disable file board 01B12 and then re-enter the command enable filesystem board 01B12 login denver broncos to try it again.

2. Make sure that you are enabling the filesystem on the actual VAL board, and not on a CLAN board. VAL boards act as both the source and target for your upgrades. Use the command disp ip-int to confirm the location and name of your VAL board, use list node-name to match the board name with the correct IP address.

Well... I've disabled, and re-enabled.

enable filesystem board 01B12 login denver broncos

Here is the IP-Interfaces screen:

[y VAL 01B12 TN2501 valboard 255.255.255.0 192.168.1 .1]

Here is the Node-Names IP screen:
IP NODE NAMES
Name IP Address
valboard 192.168.1 .21

The only port I'm able to FTP to is the VAL port.
The C-Lan gives me this error when I try to connect to it:
> ftp: connect :Connection refused

When I ftp 192.168.1.21
I get this:
Connected to 192.168.1.21.
220 r3ccama FTP server (SunOS 5.7) ready.
User (192.168.1.21:(none)):

After I enter the user name: denver

I get the following prompt:
331 Password required for denver.
Password:

I then enter: broncos

After that I get:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.

I've tried this multiple times with multiple logins & passwords - but to no avail...

Thanks for all your efforts,
Chris

I'm stumped; can't find any reason why what you're doing won't work. Perhaps someone else can leap in here, or you might end up having to call Denver.

It looks like your network is setup with a proxy FTP server. If you can't get the network folks to reset this for you then you may have to connect to the same segment that the VAL card is attached to. You would need to connect a laptop, etc. to the other end of the network ethernet cable long enough to allow you to do what you need.

I cant believe I missed this...When I first installed my Val Board it worked like a champ until I tried to use the FTP portion. It looks like you have it on a Small Linksys router? Either put it on another switch (router) or pull a Homerun to your network. For what ever reason that I havent figured out, You will not be able to FTP unless the Val and Clan are on different switches (router). The same goes for a medpro....they can't be on the same hub/router/switch.

In the future everything will work...

Probably the reason you are unable to FTP from the same switch or router is because the ports are blocked. I opened mine up and can FTP fine from the same switch/router.

Explain g3rguy...what ports?

In the future everything will work...

ftp-data, port 20/tcp #FTP, data
ftp, port 21/tcp #FTP. control

if a router/switch between you and the VAL has traffic on these ports blocked, no ftp for you.
