Hi,
Is anyone know about using FTP under Linux firewall system?
I have problem for transfer data thru Linux system.
I went to DOS prompt and using FTP command. I try to using PUT command to send the data to our remote host but cursor just blink on put command. It didn't send the data. I talk to the technician who setup Linux firewall system. He said the passive mode on Linux doesn't have function for Dos FTP. IS that true? IF not, how do I transfer data thru Linux firewall using FTP.

Please Help!!!!!
Thanks

Yaling

I don't think he's correct about the problem being with your dos ftp client. Some firewalls are setup to block everything, then just the ports needed are opened. Although ftp server uses port 21, data gets transfered on port 20. Check to see that port 20 is active.

You can try turning passive mode off first, see if that makes a difference.

Once connected just type: PASS

But I suspect RhythmAce is right, port 20 is required for the data channel.

Thanks. I will check our technician to check these setup.

I just check our technician. He still said the Ftp server won't work with ftp dos client. It only work with ftp window client. Therefore, I download evaluation WS_FTP pro and using the ftpscrp.exe. Then it works fine. That's so strange? Anway, thanks all of you help.

For testing purposes, turn the firewall off. See if you can connect to the server from the DOS client when the firewall is off. If you can, run a "netstat -nat" from the Linux server while the client is connected. Look at which ports the client is connected on. I suspect that you might have to open up some additional high numbered ports, maybe somewhere in the 3000 range as well as 20 and 21.
