We have a small network (2 SCO systems) not connected to the Internet. I am unable to transfer files from one (version 5.07) to the other (version 6.0). I apparently do not under stand the <class> requirement of the ftpaccess file or something else is being missed. Executing the ftp command at the console of the v.6.0 system receives a connection refused message. Executing the ftp command at the console of the v.5.07 system connects, but does not enter command mode.
Any assistance/advise will be appreciated.

Have you enabled the ftpd in /etc/inetd.conf? I don't remember if it is enabled by default, or if I had to uncomment the following line:

# grep ftp inetd.conf
ftp stream tcp nowait root /etc/ftpd ftpd -a

To clarify your symptoms: Can you ftp from the SCO6 system to itself? Can you do the same on the 5.0.7 box?

man hosts.equiv

Hope This Helps, PH.

Hello, thanks for the responses, however they are not the solution. The entry for ftpd and telnetd are both in the inetd.conf and the hosts.equiv has the system names in it.

The ps -e command reveals that neither ftpd or telnetd are running. TCP appears to be alive and well as ping works both ways.

Attempting to start telnetd as root causes an error in the getpeername process "socket attempted on non-socket." So I believe that somehow, something is not loading properly at boot.

Any more advice is welcome.
Regards.

Are ports 21 and 23 listed in netstat -an | grep LISTEN?

Did you expect them to be? Because that is normal if there are no current connections, they are launched by inetd.
