FTP Login Failure

I have an old AIX 4.3 server that I will call “oldaix” and I have a new AIX 5.2 server that I will call “newaix”. I can ftp into both servers from a Windows PC, can ftp from “oldaix” to “newaix” but I get “Login failed” when ftp’ing from “newaix” to “oldaix”. Any ideas as to what I need to check?

Check out ftp.allow & ftp.deny in /etc

Are /etc/ftp.allow and /etc/ftp.deny supported on AIX?

rvickers, can you post the actual error message?
Also, check if the ADMCHG flag is set for the account on "oldaix" This will prevent ftp connections, but it should prevent it regardless of the originating system.

You can also check whether .netrc existings for the originating account on "newaix" There could be interference from that if an automated login is being attempted and is failing.

Look at the ftpusers file.

I thought about /etc/ftpusers as well... but I think it gives a different error message than the one described in the initial post. I think it's a "denied" not a "failed" message. It's definately worth a look.

Are you logging onto "oldaix" with the same username and password you used when ftping from a pc?

Can't find ftp.allow, ftp.deny, netrc or a ftpusers file on either system. I am logging in as root and it's rejecting after the password, as if the password was incorrect. There is no password on "oldaix" for root.

When you ftp into oldaix from your Windows pc (which you said was working), what account are you using?

Oops! I just ftp'd to oldaix from a windows pc and it failed. I goofed on my earlier diagnosis. Could be just a password problem. Let me try a few things now that I have discovered that.

No troubles. I had some idiot user tell me their application couldn't access a database anymore (and who told me the application was running), so after 2+ hours of looking into it with a network admin, and we couldn't find anything, we were finally told, "oh, I'm sorry. The application isn't running.
