I have a single SBS box. We now need to use FTP. I set up the FTP site on the server. Any user can log onto the ftp site, browse and downloand with no problems. None of the users can upload a file larger than 1Mb may be 1.01Mb. One of 2 errors happen.
1. The connection will seam to hang at 10 seconds left on the transfer. We can wait 30 mins and the connection is still open and say 10 seconds left.
2. The upload will take along time and then come back with error 200. Which I cannot seem to trace.

Any idea's?

Do you have any limits on your FTP accounts or bandwidth traffic with your ISP?

Tony

How did you set up FTP? Is this related at all to SharePoint? I know there's a fairly low upload limit on operations that use the IIS defaults, but I'm not sure it would affect straight FTP.

Wahnula.

Thanks, the FTP site is hosted on site, and on our own server. I have checked with my IPS there are no upload limits, port blocking or time outs.

ShackDaddy.

I setup the ftp by installing the default FTP service that came with SBS 2003. I cannot see any limits that have been installed as default. I have checked disk quoters, just incase. But I am now stumped. Can you point me in the right direction please.

come back with error 200
For me, error 200 is: command OK

Hope This Helps, PH.

Yes small files do get created. Larger files over 1 meg seem to take forever to upload, but the upload never finishes. If I try and upload a directory with 10 exel files in it some of the files will apear If I use Ctrl,Alt and delete to cancle the job.

Try turning off the Application Level Gateway service on your server and then testing again to see if behavior is any different. It's known to cause issues with FTP.

Are you running ISA on the SBS box?

Thanks.

NO i am not running ISA as it is only SBS2003 standard. What on earth dose Application Level Gateway do? If I disable it for a test will it efferct any other services?

It's a subservice of the Windows Firewall Service that handles firewall negotiation for 3rd-party products. It's caused FTP issues for some people. It's already disabled or on manual (and not running) on several of the servers I manage.

Ok tryed disabling "Application Level Gateway" It did not cure the problem, Thanks anyway.

The only thing it did do was make the log on process hang.

Do you have a firewall/broadband router in front of your server? If so, you could at least try an FTP session with the Windows Firewall disabled and see if you get the same behavior. Originally a lot of people with this issue were disabling the Windows Firewall and claiming success, but later it was determined that the Application Level Gateway (which shuts down along with the Firewall) was the service creating the issue.

We have a Netgear FVS318 router. I have opened up port 21 on the router and on the server ftp is allowed through the server. When I checked the firewall on the server was disabled. The message says that there be another program or service running that may need NAT's.

Are you blocking any outbound traffic at all? You probably know that FTP has a complicated connection process. Have you tried shifting between Active and PASV mode with the ftp client?

I have come across active and passive in some of the reading I have been doing, but cannot see where or how to make the change between the two.

How to change the Internet Explorer FTP Client mode
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box.
5. Click to select the Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility) check box.
6. Click OK.

Internet Explorer behaves as a Standard mode FTP client if you select the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box, even if you also select the Use Passive FTP check box. If you clear the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box and then select the Use Passive FTP check box, Internet Explorer behaves as a Passive mode FTP client.

Now we are getting somewhere.

Now I can upload large files. Even tryed one at 120Meg. It uploaded with no problems.

Downloading is still a problem..... Small files around the 1 Meg mark download without fault. On larger files the process seems to get stuck or hung up some where.

I may try a uninstall/reinstall of the ftp utility just to see if there were any conflicts when it was first installed.

I have opened up port 21 on the router
Port 20 is also required fot ftp.

Hope This Helps, PH.
