Hi

I am trying to log on to our NT server (Service pack 6) from a client of our SCO Unix (Open Server 5).

I get a good response when I type ftp ipaddress

The response is....

Connected to dmachine.
220 dmachine Microsoft FTP Service (Version 2.0).

Followed by the prompt for the user name and then password.

I am using the name/password of the NT administrator but the response is....

530 User abc cannot log in.
Login failed.
Remote system type is unknown
Using ascii mode to transfer files.
ftp>

Clearly I should switch something on in the NT Box - by what is it.

Thanks.

You need to set an FTP user fom within the IIS section to make it secure. It also allows you to set a reply so that when a user opens the connection the server replies with the text you've specified e.g.:

**********************************
- - - - NT4FTP - - - -

Unauthorised access to this system
is illegal
**********************************

Dont forget DONT use 'Welcome to ....' as this can be miscontrued as an invitation to use a system

Thanks PeteH2

I have looked in help on NT for IIS nothing there - Don't know if its on my machine, cant find it in Services either.

I will keep digging - many thanks anyway

I am using SCO 5.0.5 and 5.0.6 with ftp to my IIS NT 4.0 box.
NT:I have ftp folder setup with multilpe directories, I have one set just for ex: "UNIX" then I have a ftp users group, then I add the user or users to that group. On "UNIX" folder I have a shared name, not web shered, then I have permissions set on that folder to allow the user or users there rights along with admin.
You do not IIS configured correctly if you are using IIS 4.0. Permissions are the most important key here. If you want to share with other users or not is the purpose behind sharing the folder. If admin is the only one then you really don't need the share but, you will need to add admin( or ftpuser ) correct permissions if you want to put and get from SCO boxes to NT or vise versa. I currently have a script that runs my put from SCO to NT, the username and password are in the file, that is why I am not using admin login.

Thanks captnstile

but as I said to the previous answer, I'm still trying to find IIS. It does not seem to be on my machine.

Thanks for your help

I'm pretty sure that you will need IIS installed before a standard NT installtion can be set up to offer the facility of an FTP server.

If IIS isnt installed and / or you dont want to install it, there are third party FTP servers that can be instaleld intead. One of the most popular freeware ones is warFTP and can be found here-> Personally, I've no experience of this, so I cant give any opinions on it at all.
