I have been experiencing many FTP connection problems since moving to Windows Server 2003.

I'm not using the build in Windows FTP service, but another commercial solution, in fact tried 4 different FTP servers including the Windows one, all fail with the same error.

First LISTS can't be served on port 21, all clients get (Thrashed response received), then I made it listen to port 22, and now the message is (Error opening data socket) the connection is made, but it stays like that, no file lists or anything else.

I have tried many different servers, and they all have the same behaviour.

It's not my firewall, since I have it disabled for testing purposes, and the Windows firewall is also disabled, so what could be causing this issues on ws2k3? The FTP server used to run fine on Win 2000 Server, I suspect is something within ws2k3 that's causing the problems, just don't know where to look.

Thank you.

I just installed Windows Server 2003. I will setup FTP and test this out to see if I get the same error. How did you setup your Windows FTP site?

I'm using Bullet Proof FTP Server, which in my view is one of the best FTP servers, and it used to run just fine in Win 2000, but in W2003, it begun to misbehave, in fact all FTP servers were doing the same, even the build in Windows FTP server, don't know what it is, but clients just receive the messages I said before.

Thanks.

If you haven't heard of it, then you most likely don't need it.

Is that the build in FTP server you are using?

All FTP servers I try have the same problems, so I'm guessing it's not the FTP servers but something else in Win 2003.

If you haven't heard of it, then you most likely don't need it.

Here's a small troubleshoot... let me know if it helps =)

If you want to use IIS6.0 for your ftp server, make sure you have the following conditions true:

---Any other FTP Service you had previously installed (if any) are now disabled... You might have to even go into Task Manager and manually shut them off (if you don't know how to uninstall them completely or turn them off) I had this problem with SlimFTPD and FileZilla
---If you are using a router then make sure that it points to the port 21 (or whatever port you wish to use)
---The actual service is running on IIS6.0
---You have correct permissions setup for the account

I'm sure there are others, but nothing else pops into my mind

Good Luck =)

I am using Windows FTP service which comes with IIS6 in the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.

I was able to setup FTP though Windows 2003 IIS with no problems, but I am unable to restirct access to certain folders. FTP users that I create have fill access to view the folder stuructures, though I have been able to restrict them from uploading. I would like them if possible to see available folders but only have access to certain ones, and/or only see folder they have right to.

Any help is appreciated.

HI !
Im trying real hard to set up ftp on windows 2003 enterprise server , should be simple ! but nooooooooooo ! users cant log on , quite apart from the fact i had to set port to 20 data it just isnt happening , it doesnt make any diffrence if its anon or not and i have gone through ms setup info twice from scratch , and keep getting the same damnn thing "users cant logon " i thought it might be to do with ip address but doesnt matter what i put there ie localhost ip or pointing it to main server or whatever , it works with others like filezilla but would like to run it on 2003 , any help well apreciated !

I had this same issue using ServU FTP Server. The problem is that ServU's Service needs to be assigned to Administrator privledges. To do this open services by typing services.msc right click on the service you want to change, change its log on to something like administrator. This worked for me and hopefully it works for you. I think the login user needs to be someone who has access to the directory being shared by FTP Server.

No... permission set free for everything but the problem still!!!

Yes, I have the same problem, too :)
