Hi

Not sure this is the right forum for this question so apologies if I am.

I'm having problems ftp-ing to our web server. I can access it fine directly from our server using cute ftp but can't do it from any workstation.

We have a firewall installed and are running windows 2000 server and workstation. There seems to be some sort of problem between the clients and server .

Does anyone know how I resolve this or what is happening?

Many thanks

Gary

Your firewall could be blocking the passive ports that the FTP server is using. Passive FTP servers use port 21 but also use higher number ports of other data. On some FTP server you can set the range the server uses then open it on your firewall.

What happens when you try to connect? Does it reject your connection immediately? Does it seem to hang forever?

There are a couple of probable problems. Your firewall has port 21 open (for FTP) but doesn't have port 20 open (for FTP data). Or maybe you don't have either open.

Also, it could be a DNS resolution issue. Most ftp servers will do a reverse address resolution when you connect. If you can't access DNS from the ftp server or it takes a long time to resolve, then the session won't start until the DNS request times out. Then you will get a prompt.

Our main server can ftp fine. The server sits behind the firewall so surely that means that the relevant ports are open.

The problem is when a workstation request an ftp connection. Sorry if I'm missing the point here.

Hey, I'm in the same situation like you, same setup and bla bla. My server is accessible anywhere from any computer. But like others said, the problem i ran into was the closed ports plus the firewall. So try doing this, have another computer on the network try to connect to the server and look at the server to see if the firewall prompts you on either to let your connection come through or not? try it if you haven't already done so. good luck!
